Yes, not recommend washing under water, because the gears are very precise, although they are stainless steel, washing in water would not be good for protect gears for long time use. Actually we would recommend using a light mineral oil to lubricate the gears periodically as per instruction manual.

this pasta maker attachment fits on to the kitchen aid attachment nose in the front. Unscrew the long bolt by hand and remove the nose plug. Then the pasta attachment insert fit into that spot.

It is Stainless. However, I returned that one and got the kitchenaid 3piece Pasta Attachment. I felt it was more heavy duty for a life time. It was a gift for my daughter and I already had the kitchenaid so I knew the difference. Hope this helps
