If there was a pattern, like argyles, I placed it so it could be seen from the top. The divider spacing kept some tension on the socks so they stayed securely rolled. I had one that when I tried to lower the trigger thing to secure it, it kept retracting the extension. I fixed it by lowering the trigger half way, then pulling it back up while holding the extension in place. There was some ratcheting noise, but everything loosened up and it worked fine after that. My comments about some of the reviews here: 1. If you think they cost too much, go read the reviews of the cheap ones. I expect them to be around for several years. Once installed, I doubt they'll be touched again, so wear and tear won't be an issue. 2. If you don't own a tape measure, please order one. Many of the negative reviews seemed to be about not fitting. That's not the fault of the device. Those ratings are unfair. 3. I think they look fine in the drawer, kind of high tech minimalist.
