Schaum's Outline of Complex Variables, 2ed: Second Edition

This was the book that I used for my first complex variables course as an undergraduate, and I still turn back to it for practice. Unlike a complex analysis book, or even more typical complex variables book, the focus is really not on the theory. Learning how to prove theorems is not the point of the book, so each section does give a rundown of what the relevant theorems, state and examples of how to use them before giving a whole bunch of problems to practice on. The professor of that class was extremely focused on problem solving techniques over understanding much beyond how to extend things like line integrals and geometric series to solving problems. When I retook the course for a refresher before beginning my analysis sequencing graduate school, I didn't find myself at much of a loss at all when it came to the theory. Part of the reason is that I had another terrific for professor, but part of the reason is also that I had already learned how to do the problems. It's a good approach, along the same vein as how we teach students calculus before we teach them analysis: having a basic familiarity with how the problems works helps to understand what the theorems actually do, which it easier for me to understand what was going on in the proofs. I would not recommend this book to learn the subject for the first time, necessarily, at least not without lecture notes to assist. However, it's excellent as a refresher and as a tool for studying, not only because it gives you a localized list of important theorems and examples of how they are applied, but because there are just so many problems to do.

I have been using Schaum’s to complement the standard textbooks. I learned the subject matter by practicing on the exercises provided by Schaum’s. I have gained a better understanding of complex variables by using Schaum’s. Each section provides a very clear and simple explanation of the topic, to be followed by numerous exercises. I highly recommend using it.

Typos galore. Incorrect answers sometimes. I though it was me haha, but multiple smart people in my class agreed. That being said, you will learn the material

This is a great companion to your favorite "Mathematical Methods for Physicists" text. (I was introduced to Complex Analysis in that context when I was a sexy Physics Major in the 80's.) A review of Complex Analysis & Contour Integrals is motivated by a current task related to Signal Processing, as a Grey Beard! There's lots of worked examples, problems to work (with solutions), and a number of theorems not covered in a Math Methods text. From my experience from Graduate Mathematics courses, this has a rich section on applications to illustrate the use of the more abstract theorems. I've had fun with it!

I've had three Schaum's outlines so far (Advanced Mathematics.., Mechanical Vibrations, Complex Variables) and this one is just as useful as the others. It's a great resource if you are someone who needs to see examples of math problems to gain proficiency. I don't do well going from theory to application to execution without seeing a few examples, and that is exactly what this outline does. It also has many many such examples that are clearly explained without making the "leaps of abstraction" that can easily lose the less experienced students. If you are taking a course in Complex Variables, or are considering studying complex analysis this book is definitely worth the money.

I bought this book to study for a graduate school exam. I took a complex variables course, but needed to refresh and learn a few things beyond what was taught in my class. I couldn't have passed the exam without this book. It is not loaded down with jargon or abstract theory. It teaches you very practical techniques for solving different classes of problems. It has many fully worked out examples, which you can copy and work out on your own as you practice. If you're looking for practical help, this is definitely better than a textbook or anything you could find online.

On Kindle for PC... If you zoom the text so that you can read it better, the mathematical equations (which are in a graphical format) won't zoom. I think all graphics should zoom. Why wouldn't the graphics zoom if the text zooms??? It makes no sense. I don't know if this is a problem with Kindle or a problem with the way the book was created. But it is QUITE ANNOYING. I might have to return the digital copy and buy the print version.

I'm studying Math and I have took a course of Complex Variables, and like all Schaum's books you can rely on a vast variarity of exercises. Also you can count on a complete resume with concepts, theorems and definitions, you have answers for the exercises, and it contains the complete curricula for my subject. I recommend it for sure!

Great purchase!! I had a module based on complex analysis and mechanics, and this definitely helped loads for the complex analysis part. I noticed that my lecturer had used a few similar/exactly the same questions from this book. Also, it taught me a little bit about how to integrate a definite integral using complex analysis. Would definitely recommend it as a supplement to your studies if it's relevant to your module. There was a lot of stuff in here which wasn't as relevant but all in all it was a great purchase for me I don't think I would have got a good grade otherwise.

A required text book for my wife's class. Was very cheap and actually has helped her when studying for exams.
