Does this work on a plastic tank (my son just has a small 1.5 gallon plastic tank)?

No, not this model. But there are other smaller versions designed for a acrylic fish tank. Make sure you get the one made for acrylic and rated for your size tank or you will have a very badly scratched tank.

Would this work in a bowl or no?

No this would not work in a bowl. Needs a flat surface for the tiny short Velcro like bristles to make contact with the glass.

what size is best for 36 bowfront. also your supposed to leave it in the tank?

By 36 I guessing that's gallons? If so I'd say the small or med. would be good. I do leave mine in the tank & just have up on the side out of the way.

Is it safe for acrylic tanks and won't scratch it up ?

This is for Glass Only! Mag Float makes an acrylic mag cleaner but they are blue in color and state "Acrylic Cleaner" on the Front of the package.
