If you have SAD, Consider this
Norther Light was the brand of Lightbox that my shrink recommend to me and I haven't had any problems. There may be cheaper options, but I haven't tried them. So far, the box has positively impacted my mood. But you should consider a light box based on a doctor's recommendation, not on Amazon reviews. As such, I'll not review the effects of the box but the quality of the product itself. It's durable. It's stood up to travel so far. The stand is easy to screw and unscrew, yet holds when you need it to. The light is bright, but it's supposed to be. The nice thing is that it's diffuse so when I use it, with the box placed about a foot away from my face and off to my right, it doesn't bother me. It doesn't overheat, either. I keep it on for well over an hour, and it maintains a reasonable temperature. It does get warm, but that's all the more reason for my cat to love it. That is, I use it to treat MY SAD, my cat just happens to love to bask in its glow with me. Again, I have NOT tried other light boxes, but I haven't had to. This one has worked just fine.

Significantly Improved Quality of Life
I am more than satisfied with this product. I use it for the treatment of Seasonal Affective Disorder. My doctor prescribed a 10,000 lux lamp to be used for 30 minutes within 1 hour of waking up. I am to let the light come directly into my eyes from up to a meter away, while diverting my line of vision. I tend to use my computer screen as a focal point and take care of my daily "chores" on the web during my 30 minutes of therapy. I place the lamp just a couple feet behind my computer for ease. I chose to purchase this 10,000 lux lamp because of personal anecdotes shared by other SAD suffers whom had wonderful results. I am pleased to say that I have had fabulous results with this lamp too! Before, when I woke up in the months of October through February, the day just seemed bleak, even before it started. I had no energy whatsoever, nor any real desire for activity. Now, I wake up and BAM! Upon completion of 30 minutes of light therapy, it's like the light bulb in my head turned on. My day has started. And, I have energy for the day. Motivation too! I can feel an immediate difference upon completion of my prescribed 30 minutes. What is even better, is that I can easily take the lamp anywhere. It small, light-weight, and comes with a wonderful, discreet carrying case. I cannot sing "Northern Light Technologies Nlt-trv Travelite" enough praises! This product has had a huge positive impact on my quality of life.

Just what the doctor ordered
My doctor told me that I would benefit from light therapy to help regulate my sleep times and duration. He said it would also lift my mood and energize me each day. I am planning a trip soon and light therapy also speeds recovery from jet lag. The Northern Light travel lamp is great. I can't believe the results. It has its own travel case and is easy to take wherever I go. It has 10,000 lux and white light just as my doctor ordered. Using it doesn't interfere with my morning routine. I read the paper and have my tea each morning for only 30 minutes. You can put it on your desk at work, turn it on, and start working. Ask your doctor about it. Northern Light technologies is a Canadian business. The quality of my lamp is excellent and it comes with a guarantee.

Powerful enough, yet compact & portable; higher quality compared Carex, Verilux
I've used light therapy for over a decade. I don't get depressed (i.e., feeling gloomy) in winter (true S.A.D.), but I simply stop being able to get out of bed as the mornings get dark. Lack of light affects my sleep in a profound way; light therapy helps me immensely. As sunrise gets later, first I use a sunrise simulation alarm clock. (I like the Phillips Wake-up model now, but started with different ones that used incandescent bulbs ~30 years ago!) This helps me until early October. After that, I require more light to continue to function normally. My first therapy lamp was the older style Carex 10,000 lux model. It had skinny rod legs, two rods on each side leg. It looked ugly as anything, but it lived on my dining table every winter for several years because that was the location where I could consistently use it as I gave my toddlers breakfast. I still use that lamp over my desk, but its legs broke off years ago and now it rests on a wire shelf above my monitor. Understand that a fluorescent lamp will light up for 20,000 hours or so... but the 10,000 lux you need for therapy is only possible for the first ~2000 hours of a fluorescent bulb. For that reason, I've purchased other lamps since then. Next I tried Verilux models (no longer made.) The mechanical switches on two of my three cheaper Verilux lamps (vaguely recangular boxes, much thicker than the Northern Lights box I'm reviewing here) broke over time. One was garbage; the other is always on when plugged in. I now use that, on a timer, in my teen's room to help him wake up for school when it gets dark. My next really serious therapy lamp (because the small Verilux ones weren't powerful enough for me) was a Northern Lights floor lamp purchased in 2016. Amazon still sells it; it's the black, freestanding floor model called the Flamingo. That lamp sits at my living room couch, so I have the option of treatment while I read a book in comfort. It was high quality and seems to work as promised, so I developed a positive opinion of the brand. That Flamingo lamp still seems powerful enough to assist with my sleep issues, but I wanted an additional light to use in my bedroom first thing every morning. For this reason, I bought the Northern Lights Travelite box lamp. The Travelite is my slimmest, most "portable" therapy light yet. I debated buying this one vs. the larger Lux Bright box light, but I wanted the lighter weight option. I may try using this on a camera tripod, or on a picture ledge mounted above my pillow right by the bed. I wanted a slim, lightweight lamp for this purpose. My lamp came two days ago. I got some relief on day one, and felt a definite improvement by the second morning. For me, putting a lamp like this on a timer--so it comes on as my sunrise lamp nears its max brightness (at "alarm" time I set)--is the key to waking in a healthy way in late autumn and winter. The Northern Lights Travelite has a physical, mechanical switch, so you can use it on a plug in timer if you want to do this, too. Having tried all three brands, I believe the aluminum construction used by Northern Lights makes for a more durable, longer lasting therapy lamp compared with Verilux (cheapest electronics) and Carex (good light but flimsy stand.) I also think Northern Lights is the only brand to offer replacement bulbs, which also suggests their hardware is durable enough to still be in good shape after 20,000 hours of fluorescent bulb life.

Definitely Worth It!
This product has worked perfectly since I got it. I take it with me to work on Monday and use it for an hour a day and take it home on Friday so I'll have it for the weekend. It travels very well and have had no problems. As far as how it has helped me, I have suffered from depression for a number of years. Medication does a fairly good job but winter time is particularly difficult. I got this to see if it would work for winter. I had difficulty the last six months with constantly wanting to eat even when stuffed. I would try to cut back, only to fail at controlling my diet. I was very surprised when after 3 days of light therapy the desire to eat all the time went away. I also feel more energetic and have increased my exercise. I've gotten a lot of house projects done that I had been putting off for a long time (wanting to get them done but just couldn't bring myself to do them). I feel like I am in more control than I have in a very long time! I'm sending the expense to my flexible spending account since insurance wouldn't pay for it. The FSA will pay me back if I get a letter of medical necessity from my doctor. She's the one who recommended it to me so no problem there. I would definitely recommend this product!

complete trash. arrived broken (see pic)
Just took it out of the box and it was "rattling." I decided, "Hey. Maybe that's just the design" so I plugged it in and nothing turned on. I unscrewed the front plate (thankfully, that was easy), and as you can see from the pic, both LED "lamps" (or whatever technology is used to generate the light) were detached from their supports and they were no longer plugged into the connections to the power cord. I connected the "lamps" to the power connectors and re-fastened them, but the lights still did not turn on. Presumably, the lights detached in transit (who knows) because the connectors are quite flimsy, and broke something inside those lamps. Incredibly shoddy workmanship.

Great Product
This light box was recommend to me by a professional in 2009 for treatment of Seasonal Affective Disorder. I am starting my 3rd "season" using it. I definitely notice a difference since starting light therapy. While the product may be on the expensive side, it is definitely worth it. The light is compact enough to travel and easy to use at home as well. It is easily stored in a drawer if you prefer it to be put away when not in use. It fits well on a nightstand or in my case the bathroom windowsill. This light therapy box is much better than anything that can be purchased in a store. If light therapy has been recommended to you, consider giving this unit a try.

Best for SAD
Works perfectly......I have recommended this and many friends have purchased and used with great success. Be sure and use it correctly. Start with no more than 20 minutes and use in the morning to prevent having sleep problems at bedtime. Be sure and sit in front of it and frequently look into the lamp as you MUST make eye contact to get the results you want. I would read morning paper, for example, while I used it. (For some reason it makes me nauseated if I try to eat breakfast at the same time, so I'll just have decaf. coffee.) Probably best not to use MORE than an hour a day and never after noon. ....again, you don't want it to cause insomnia. The effect is NOT a caffeine affect, rather, you have more energy and an improved, positive mood. Use daily.

The right spectrum and brightness.
I have four of these, stretching back to 2001, all different brands. This is the nicest. I don't mind the price because the quality is good enough, and the light is warm and creamy versus too white. It's sized well at 8 x 14 inches (my age is showing). Once it's warmed up, the light is hard not to marvel. Very much like the sun. And no, I have no skin in the game here. This puts out a lot of nice sunlight. My cat hangs out in front of it a lot.

Owned for about 3 years and no issues
I use this through out the year but mostly in winter. I have it hung on my wall next to my reading nook. I find it noticeable helpful during the long winters. I would recommend it to friends and if I ever need to I would purchase again.

So far so good!
It's exactly as described. I've been using it the past several days and it seems to be helping reduce the sleep headaches I used to get on cloudy mornings or after several cloudy days in a row (I live in snowy Ottawa). I wake up and sit with it for about 30 mins while I have breakfast. It's not bothersome or painful (just don't stare right at it!). Bonus: I ordered black and it's actually a really sleek and stylish piece. I'm happy to leave it sitting out on my desk. My MIL has the ivory and I'm a bit less fond of that look. Arrived quickly with friendly instructions for use. Very simple assembly.

so good.
This has definitely helped me so far this winter - Normally as soon as the sun goes away I have a lot of trouble waking up in the morning. Typically in the summer I wake up at 7-7:30 ish and in the winter at around 8-8:30 because it's so difficult to get up sooner with the darkness. With this light, I have been able to consistently wake up at 6:45 (!!! that's early for me!), I get dressed etc. & sit in front of the lamp for 30 minutes before heading off to work. It's made a huge difference in my overall perkiness. Of course, winter has only just started, so we'll see how I feel in February... but so far, so good.
