The landmark text about the inner workings of the unconscious mind--from the symbolism that unlocks the meaning of our dreams to their effect on our waking lives and artistic impulses--featuring more than a hundred updated images that break down Carl G. Jung's revolutionary ideas "What emerges with great clarity from the book is that Jung has done immense service both to psychology as a science and to our general understanding of man in society."-- The Guardian "Our psyche is part of nature, and its enigma is limitless." Since our inception, humanity has looked to dreams for guidance. But what are they? How can we understand them? And how can we use them to shape our lives? There is perhaps no one more equipped to answer these questions than the legendary psychologist Carl G. Jung. It is in his life's work that the unconscious mind comes to be understood as an expansive, rich world just as vital and true a part of the mind as the conscious, and it is in our dreams--those personal, integral expressions of our deepest selves--that it communicates itself to us. A seminal text written explicitly for the general reader, Man and His Symbols is a guide to understanding our dreams and interrogating the many facets of identity--our egos and our shadows, "the dark side of our natures." Full of fascinating case studies and examples pulled from philosophy, history, myth, fairy tales, and more, this groundbreaking work--profusely illustrated with hundreds of visual examples--offers invaluable insight into the symbols we dream that demand understanding, why we seek meaning at all, and how these very symbols affect our lives. Armed with the knowledge of the self and our shadow, we may build fuller, more receptive lives. By illuminating the means to examine our prejudices, interpret psychological meanings, break free of our influences, and recenter our individuality, Man and His Symbols proves to be--decades after its conception--a revelatory, absorbing, and relevant experience. A brilliant book
I am studying counselling and enjoy reading material beyond the standard book list. My teacher mentioned this one once in class so I jotted down the title and ordered it initially from the library. A popular book, so it had to go back after a few weeks for someone else. I did not have opportunity to complete the book, but was so impressed with what I had read that I decided to go for an amazon purchase and have not been disappointed. A good investment. However I do recommend the version that I bought if you are keen on the visuals because the book is focussed on symbolism the pictures and size/detail add a valued dimension. You can buy other versions for less money and the text is impressive however I am glad I went for the version with clear colour images. A classic book whether you are studying or if you want to find out more on symbolism.

This is a nice big edition with good quality paper and lots of pictures
I have read this wonderful book already, many years ago, and I wanted to reread it. Having lost my original copy, which was a small paperback, I was after a nicer hardback edition - this is definitely a book that benefits from illustrations. I hesitated over which one as some reviews comment on how small some of the hardback editions are and it wasn't clear to me which edition the reviews refer to. Anyway this edition is great. Large and full of illustrations. Exactly what I was hoping for

Size and Print quality could be better.
The book could be better printed and more oversized. For example, Joseph Campbell's book heads off to the Campbell's Foundation. They used much better printing quality.

Jung's Masterpiece on the Power of Symbols
Carl Jung’s Man and His Symbols offers a profound exploration of the role of symbols in our collective unconscious. I purchased this book on 24 December 2000 while studying the intersection of psychology and symbolism, looking for insight into how the unconscious shapes human behavior. In this essential work, Jung explores the power of symbols as vehicles for understanding deeper unconscious processes. He argues that these symbols are a universal language that can bridge the gap between conscious and unconscious minds, helping us understand both individual and collective behavior. In today’s world, where self-awareness and emotional intelligence are becoming more important, Jung’s exploration of symbols helps illuminate the subconscious forces that still guide our actions, thoughts, and emotions. Anyone interested in psychology, the unconscious mind, or how symbols shape our reality will find this book to be a crucial guide. I purchased this copy myself and continue to keep it as part of a long-term reading archive documenting the thinkers and ideas that shaped modern understanding of the human mind.

A must read
Man and His Symbols is a must read for persons who are fans of Carl G. Jung. As stated by the Guardian, what emerges with great clarity from this book is that Jung has done immense service both to psychology as a science and to our general understanding of man in society, by insisting that imaginative life must be taken seriously in its own right, as the most distinctive characteristic of human beings. This book is amazing. It was "dumb-downed" if you will, so that the average person like me could understand Jungs writing. Before he died he insisted that this should be and it was. A must read for anyone who is a fan of Jung.

Still hasn't lost its charm and mystery.
Read this in college and it still hasn't lost its charm and mystery after all these years. It's erudite and highly readable: I especially enjoyed the chapters on 'The Process of individutaion' and 'Symbols in the visual arts'. Various plates are scattered in the book but in black and white so it's hard to appreciate them. Nevertheless, a good read!
