This problem was solved by turning the camera's built-in volume control almost all the way down and then compensating for the lost volume level with an external battery-powered preamp (Saramonic SmartRig II) but it required this adapter to convert the 1/8" male microphone plug to the 1/4" input on the preamp. To make it all work I also needed a TRRS to TRS converter on the output side of the preamp. The outside is plastic and the inside is actually made out of metal. When you plug two speaker wires into it, one to each side, they slide right in, and fit tightly and like magic, the sound flows from one wire to the other.
