I had bought the older type which looked like a small box on top of the unit but have now switched to this newer design.I am very pleased as they have a wider spread of light - they are reliable and very economic on battery usage because they only come on at night when they detect movement - batteries have lasted well over a year. With the older design the batteries were housed in the top unit and a couple failed because they got wet inside but with this new design that doesn't happen. The batteries are housed in a line in the support post. They sit about 40cm tall once the spike is sunk into the ground and the head is angled to focus the light down and in front of the stalk, with a motion sensor placed just underneath. The motion sensor also has a dusk-sensor function built in which means that your lights won't waste their battery switching on during the day.I've got them lighting some tricky steps in the garden and I'm more than happy. They sense motion from about 3-4m away, so the steps are already clearly lit by the time I get there. The angle of the light means there's no dazzling glare in your eyes, just a crisp, white light revealing any potential hazards at your feet.
