I loved the story but found it difficult to follow
I loved the story but found it difficult to follow. .it jumped all over the place..still not sure how the title fits in with the book! It only seemed to be relevant to one of the timelines.

" I believe it is a testament to how good the book is that not only was I still ...
It was THREE days after putting the book down while pulling into the parking lot of the grocery store I looked at my Hubby and exclaimed, "AHA!" I believe it is a testament to how good the book is that not only was I still thinking about it three days later, BUT it took that long for the pieces to fall in place and for me to figure it out. While reading the different stories, I really could not see how they were going to fit together, or if they ever were going to weave together. The journey through the lives of the characters was fun and exciting, scary and disheartening, hopeful and hopeless at the same time and at times disturbing to the point of wanting to put the book down. Each character had just a tight enough grasp on my heart though and I was not able to put the book down. At about the time I thought I had it all figured out, there would be a twist and I'd find I was wrong, which in itself kept me going because I HAD to figure out how they were all intertwined. I cannot determine if it has a sad or happy ending for two reasons. Seeing how one can so steadfastly convince oneself of a reality that is not real ultimately made me determined to make the most of my own life and the entire book is an illustration of how life stories have no endings, but continue endlessly, weaving in, out and around each other. I loved the varied stories shared in this novel and how they wove together. Ruth includes historical events and tells a variety of stories about the Jewish people in Ireland. I could imagine what it might have been like to arrive in Ireland when the expectation was to arrive in America. I enjoyed the modern relationship which address the challenges that might come up in a Catholic Jewish partnership. She also addresses Antisemitism in Ireland and the choices and lack of choice women have had throughout the generations.

3 strands of story obliquely told across a century. Pertinent because of its over-arching themes of Judaism, people in transit and identity/belonging. An early twentieth century Jewish immigration from Lithuania to Wales (mistaking Cork for New York); parents' move to Palestine as the Jewish state is about to be realised stranding their mute son (self-inflicted because of an assumed religious propriety in this action) within a convent; a modern day cross-cultural identity exploration between Ireland and North London. The overlapping details tease cleverly in and out of the story's threads leaving a layered family history that intrigues. Fascinating historical perspectives on a community I have not previously seen as a fictional focal point. Only downside for me was that sections felt far too overwritten...for me less would have been more.

I found it very hard to get really involved in it and gave up

I loved this book. Each of the three main characters had their own voice and an entirely different story, and I struggled to pick my favourite. Often the problem with books which jump through time is that the link between the storylines is disappointing, but this is absolutely not the case with Nine Folds Make A Paper Swan. A great read - you won't be disappointed.
