How does the "Multi Mode" beam work? Is it reliable?

To change between dimming modes (100%-30%-5%) press your Maglite’s switch off and on button for one second. It is reliable, you will not have any issues with it.

Can you still focus as normal? ie spot to flood??

Regarding the beam focusing due to the high output of the LED bulb it has it’s own integral reflector to help with the heat dissipation which means the focusing ability of the flashlight is lost – it’s not possible to have a light bulb with such a high lumen output without the integral reflector and this is the compromise which had to be made to bring this product to market. We find customers are happy with the fixed beam offered by the LED bulb and find this suitable for most tasks. No tool is required, the LED bulb installation is as simple as removing the existing bulb and reflector and replacing with the LED bulb. Very straightforward installation

what is the max voltage for this item? thinking about converting the Maglight D to 2x3265 lithium cells

Used in a 6 D-cell Maglite(R) with alkaline cells, this led lamp handles 9V. If the 32650 lithium cells are 3.7V, 2 in series will be 7.4V, so voltage-wise should be fine, though not tried it, so not 100% sure.
