A-98326 ImpactX 35 Pc. Driver Bit Set

A high quality versatile addition to your tool kit.

With several hundred screws taken in and out, I'm yet to make more than aesthetic dent in the bits in this set. I very much like the bit holder with the "P2" bit, but would advise that the bit holder can be a bit overzealous in holding onto bits - I keep a pair of needlenose pliers in the same bag as my impact as a result, and that's my only (slight) criticism. I've used everything but the flatheads for something or another around the house and have no complaints other than the bit holder's tendency to stick. I very much like the case these bits come in. It's rather large (notably I can't fit it, my Makita impact driver, battery, and charger base all in the impact driver's bag, for what it's worth), but makes up for that with extra space within the box, and a clever design where the hinge pulls out to allow storage of long bits, screws, or whatever else suits your fancy. It's built tough and it'll stay in my tool set even after I've ground the original bits to stubs. For the $15 I paid and the quantity of bits along with the nice case, I highly recommend.

Got it at $36. Amazon dropped the price to $20 less than 30 days later. Lesson learned! The box looks and feels great. I think the color variation from Makita teal (teal is an ugly color-admit it) is due to the material from which it's made and the manufcturing process. I actually like this color a lot better. Pictures don't do it justice. The feel of the case and the look in real life is much better, in my opinion. I like the design of the case, especially the tube for longer bits. It's sturdy enough and I think it's a better design from some others. There isn't any hard plastic that can Crack and the joints are tight enough so they will last with repeated use. The latch is better designed than the Dewalt tough box and it is thicker plastic, yet still flexible. The bits seem OK to me. Yes, the first time I put the bits into the bit holder, they stuck. Lubricate or sand down the retaining ring if you have an issue with it. After a couple of times in and out, the retaining ring gets worn down and there is no problem. In fact, I like there to be a tight hold on the bit. It eliminates slop and feels more precise. That's a plus. The magnets are also stronger than other brands I tried. Dewalt/Milwakee... If that's still an issue, Makita solved the problem with it's new set of gold bits. The bottom hex stock is taller with indents for a retaining ring, so they never get caught like the impactX black color bits, which have a shorter stock. I'll have to use the bits more to be able to review in detail, but from using the #2 Philips on some wire clamps w scews, I'd have to say that the Milwakee 3in impact ready bits are stronger, but Makita fits better, not as loose. It also depends on the screws... some fit amazingly well, some don't.

It's got a great selection, unlike most sets you find. It's got plenty of phillips, robertson, and all the common torx sizes. It's got one flathead, because I guess you have to have one even though I haven't seen any of those since 1992. The case is a little gimmicky. The way the rows flip up is nice. Storing long bits in the hinge is clever, but making it removable is pointless, and I wish they didn't need to have the instructions (in 3 languages!) permanently printed on the top. The bits will stay put but you have to mash them in really hard (like, your fingers will hurt and have a + or * imprinted on them for a few minutes) -- the flip-up rows should have solved this more easily, but somehow don't. The back has a Makita logo that sticks out in the middle, so it doesn't sit flat on a table, which is just bizarre. (Why, Makita? It's not like we wouldn't know what brand the big turquoise case is.) Then there's a ring on the bottom that sticks out awkwardly, if you wanted to tie it to something (it's too small for even a small carabiner), but I can't imagine why you would. Apparently there are two kinds of nut drivers in the world. Deep ones that are good for any nut, and super shallow ones that are only good for thin nuts. This is the shallow kind. I didn't even realize they existed before, since I've never seen them. Why is this a thing? Useless. The bit holders (silver sleeves) are not just useless, but dangerous. The other comments here warn not to put a long bit in them, so I tried putting a short bit in one. Then I spent 5 minutes with a pair of pliers to get it back out. Surely they can't be this tight by design? Terrible. UPDATE: Grab a knife and a pair of needle-nose pliers. There's a tiny retaining ring in the top of each of the bit holders. Fish it out, and throw it away. That's what locks bits permanently in place. I have no idea what they were thinking. All the bits are magnetic, so they hold just fine without it. It has nothing to do with long/short bits. With this simple modification, the bit holders work great with any bit. The packaging is the worst. It's the toughest clamshell you ever saw. I lost 3 fingers opening it. Once you get it out, you'll find several of the individual bits are packed in yet more plastic. Clearly this set was designed to look super cool on a store shelf, not to be possible for a human being to open, or environmentally friendly. Overall, the bits are fine. The case is decent but not great. The bit holders are bad but can be fixed. The nut drivers are useless but I don't mind replacing 3 parts in a 50-part set. This set is frustrating because it's a 2-star set as shipped, but with a few simple improvements it could have been a 5-star set. UPDATE: It's a year later. How's it holding up? Not bad. One T20 bit stopped driving, so I swapped it with another and that worked fine. (Who ever heard of a torx bit getting stripped?) But I'll write that up to bad luck, since it was just the one. Also, the distribution of bits is not ideal. Too many redundant phillips and slotted bits, not enough torx and robertson. Finally, the space for long bits and extenders (which I previously called "gimmicky" and "pointless" and which I have never once used) broke and spilled onto the floor. Overall, it's worked pretty well, and had every bit I've needed. For the price, it can't be beat.

Has pretty much anything you need starting out. It’s useful with its inner tube compartment for storage. I do wish the magnetic strength was stronger on certain bits but even with that it’s still an awesome kit.

Needed impact rated bits as I had stripped a few of my cheap regular bits using them on my impact driver. This pack comes with a wide variety of lengths and heads with multiples in common head sizes(ph1,2,3) the extensions work great with no issues, and bits fit well and do not cam out and strip screws with a little pressure. Only issue is removing bits from the extensions is a bit of a pain, as they lock in and you need to wiggle them to get them out.

Picked up the Makita A-98348 50-piece ImpactX set and I’m really impressed. The bits feel solid, not cheap or brittle like some of the bargain sets I’ve tried in the past. I’ve already used a handful of them with my impact driver on some stubborn screws, and they held up without stripping or rounding off. The variety in the kit is great with enough sizes and types that I’m not constantly digging through other boxes to find what I need. The case is also surprisingly sturdy and keeps everything organized instead of rattling around. Overall, a great quality set for the price. If you’re using an impact driver even semi-regularly, this is a super reliable set to have on hand. 5/5.
