Typical medical device with holes & push buttons. Strong tubing, high enough that I only had to put it under my 3" foam topper. The part that slides under it is much longer than the part that sticks up. It is adjustable but I left it at the tallest ht. There is also a strap that attaches to the underneath piece and extends to the other side of the bed to secure the bedrail to the bedframe so it can't slip out from under the mattress. There is a pouch that you can place in the upper end of the rail for remotes, book, etc. I elected to leave that off since I have a bookcase headboard and 4 cats (cat fur on black fabric anyone?) All in all, I'm very happy with the usefulness of this rail and definitely think it is a good value for the money. I did note that IF I get rid of the topper and have to use it with a 16" mattress, it can be flipped to put the shorter side under the mattress with the strap securing it to the bedframe. It was recommended to me by a nurse while we were in the hospital. It has been hugely helpful now because my husband uses it to steady himself getting into bed and can pull on it getting up, rather than on me! It has saved my back!. It is steady and very safe. Gettin up PT told him to put one hand on the rail and one hand on the walker. That way of the walker moves, you still have a hand on the bed rail. No legs to wobble.
