When you let go, it goes off. This is a safety feature in case you fall asleep to prevent burns. **Q: What is the wattage of this item??** A: I'm sorry, I don't know the wattage and no longer have the instructions. I will say that I have used this product for many years with no problem. It's very effective. The company telephone number is 1-800-253-0854. They may e able to help you. **Q: Doesn't fit** A: This particular size 14x14 is my favourite one. I use it specifically for my neck pain (broke it 2x) and migraines. I put it under my neck and my headaches are gone within 15 minutes. I've been using this for about 40 years. **Q: What is the difference between the classic and the classic plus?** A: go for the original with the switch one must hold down for heat. What I do is tuck the switch under me somewhere so that the switch stays down without having to hold it with my fingers/hand. When it gets hot enough...which is quickly....I just move a bit and let the switch release. I've been using this for 10 years; after 10 yrs the first one I bought just quit (probably my fault for twisting the pad and shorting it). I bought a second one to keep at another place during the summer. I am buying the third one to replace first one. I have severe arthritis, stenosis, lumbar and crevical pain...and this heat pad is the best I've ever tried (many.). It gets hotter than you can handle actually, which is why the switch is the way it is...to not overheat you. Love this product. But one has to be very careful to buy the original one THEROPHORE made in the USA by Battle Creek. From what I understand, all the newer models (the classic plus and the max line) are simply not "made like they used to" and either don't last as long or don't provide consistently hot enough heat. Plus the original ones actually provide moist heat without having to add water or even a damp washcloth. The pad pulls moisture from the air. For super moist, one can add a moist washcloth in between the cover and the pad safely.
