If you live anywhere with a remote Winter half'ish of this will die no matter what you do. This is essentially "Contractor Mix", I'd recommend using their black beauty ultra, and I'd also commend the company standing by their product after I learned the painful lesson I elude to above. **Q: Do you recommend using a starter fertilizer with this seed** A: I would. But please be aware that this seed is mostly annual rye, which means it will only last one season. You will have to at least overseed in the fall. **Q: When is the best time to plant this? I live in NJ** A: to be honest, the best time to seed is in the fall ( im in NJ as well). But if you are looking for sprin seeding, you can do it in mid april **Q: How well does this work with poor/sandy soil?** A: I have a variety of soils - sandy, clay, good dirt & poor dirt. It worked in all of these soils. It also worked in an area with a lot of wood chips. Backyard had some problem areas (photo) which I had to essentially reseed from scratch. The photos are exactly 6 days after I prepped my lawn, which included aeration and over seeding. Watered early am and pm each day. Was dubious given some reviews were not good. I can tell you as far as my experience - outstanding!!!!! New grass is growing so well and rapidly. I assume the negative comments were likely due to poor prep of the lawn and maybe no aeration. With the aeration, the seeds got in deep and I then rolled a thin layer of top soil mixed with peat moss. Will use again for sure, but IMO for optimal growth - lawn/soil prep is key and watering.
