Review: A perfect pairing. - I have been using an Asus Sonar soundcard and a pair of Audio Technica ath-m50 headphones on my PC. They sounded quite good but I wanted to upgrade to something better, and besides as you will see on a few reviews of those particular cans, the headband and cups wear out rather quickly and look terrible after a while. After a bit of research, I removed my PC soundcard and got the Audiolab M-DAC Mini (connected directly to the PC via USB). The sound quality definitely improved a lot, but the sound was quite flat and a bit muddy at the high end (something I have always had a problem with those cans). So I did some more research and bought a pair of Denon AHD5200EM Headphones. They are excellent build quality, great materials, feel pretty comfortable (I wear glasses so comfort is sometimes a problem with over ear cans). The sounds is excellent, but they are not reference headphones, they will colour the bass and treble somewhat, but that’s exactly what I wanted to bring the most out of the Audiolab M-DAC Mini which gives an excellent but somewhat flat sound. It’s a perfect pairing. I use them for Music, Gaming, Movies and TV and they never disappoint. I am currently listening to Allegaeon’s Apoptosis album on them (for those not familiar with this it’s fast and technical death metal that requires a particular balanced but tight sound otherwise it will sound like mush) and the pairing copes with ease. Mission accomplished I am really happy with my purchases. Review: Absolutely Brilliant - I have tried a few headphone amp’s, both portable and stand alone, but the Audiolab leaves all the others in the dust.
