Solid, well built, comes with storage bags - ideal!
Really well made and sturdy - my last plotter was flexible and a bit flimsy but this one is proper plastic and completely rigid. Feels much more solid in use, and helps keep the chart completely flat. The dividers are standard and work well, and come with a cover for the tips to keep them sharp. Both plotter and divider come with a storage bag to keep them safe. Ideal, and excellent value.

Poorly made imitation
Shame the dividers were damaged, the ends had been bent over which I would have been ok with until I saw the Portland Plotter is really very poorly made, doesn’t even line up.

Practical and accurate but with some minor finish issues.
⚓ The set includes a Portland-style course plotter made from clear acrylic and a single-handed 8-inch brass divider with stainless steel points. Both items arrived well packaged. The plotter came with its own protective bag, while the divider was wrapped in paper and a separate Velcro closure pouch. ⚓ The plotter is larger than you might expect if you've never used one before. It's made of a clear plastic that’s easy to read and handle. The directional markings are bold and clean, and the body is marked in inches along the sides and in centimetres along the top and bottom edges. There’s a knurled metal screw in the centre for grip—looks like aluminium rather than brass unfortunately—and the washer on the reverse side sits slightly off-centre, again, somewhat of a nuisance. It doesn't affect function, but I would have preferred a brass fitting to match the divider and for a more consistent finish overall. A storage bag is included, which I find useful for protecting the plastic surface between uses. ⚓ The brass divider opens and closes with good resistance. I’ve found it holds its measurement reliably and doesn’t drift during use, though I’ll need to see how that holds up over time. You can tighten the hinge screw if it loosens, which is useful. The points are stainless steel, properly aligned, and come with a plastic cap for protection. Unfortunately, the brass body isn’t as clean as I’d hoped. There’s visible pitting and some tarnish already showing, giving the surface an uneven, less than perfect finish—not terrible, but closer to something that looks somewhat used rather than new. More a 4/5. Machining is moderate; the steel-to-brass joints are solid, but there are inconsistencies in the transition between the two metals. Its no big problem for me. ⚓ Functionally, both items work as intended and the set is relatively easy to use as expected. If you're planning to use them in regular marine navigation, they’re serviceable and accurate. However, for a retirement or display gift, the finish—particularly on the divider—might not be quite presentable enough. This makes it a little difficult to judge the value as about £30 seems a little steep for an ornament but reasonable for a specialist tool that is essentially functional and does the job.✔️
