I want to use it on Black Walnut** A: I use the lighter-duty leveraxe 2 on 18" hardwood. It's fantastic for white ash and soft maple. For hard (sugar) maple forget it unless it's a smallish diameter like 12". **Q: so it can be switched to a right handed swing?** A: The LeverAxe can be used with a right hand or left handed swing. Performance is seamless! **Q: How would this axe work on knotty Douglas fir?** A: I bet it would work well. Doug fir is sort of between hardwood and softwood and I've split some pretty nasty hardwoods with it now. Knots can be trouble with any axe, but I've had good luck with the Leveraxe. He loved the wood splitting axe. My problem with this item is the handle broke off at the axe head and I cant get in touch with the company to get a new handle so the axe is useless.
