I was interested in trying this supplement mainly because of the liposomal formulation of CaAKG, hyaluronic acid, P.E.A., and vitamin C. Unfortunately, my enthusiasm waned after noticing a number of quality issues with this supplement named Shield. At first glance it looked like a CofA was posted for Shield, but a closer look indicated that the posted CoA is for a product named Defender, which does not contain vitamin C. The posted CofA for Defender reports results for berberine HCl, which is not present in Shield. No results are reported for P.E.A. The Defender CofA states that each capsule contains 110 mg CaAKG, whereas Shield has 150 mg CaAKG for one serving (2 capsules). The amounts of Hyaluronic acid in Defender and Shield are also different. The walls of the bottle I received were partially collapsed inwards - see attached picture. When I removed the inner seal, I heard air rush in and the bottle regained its original shape. It appears that some of the oxygen in the bottle was consumed creating a partial vacuum. If oxygen was consumed, then one of the ingredients had to be degraded. Based on the manufacturing date (09/2023) this product was made 9 months ago. Unfortunately, an expiration date was not printed on the bottom of the bottle. Without an expiration date and collapsed bottle consistent with product degradation, I am hesitant to continue to use this product. I have not had any adverse reactions, but I’ve only taken in for 3 days. One final observation: the product page states that this Shield supplement is 90 capsules, but the bottle I received states 120 capsules. I did not count the capsules to find out which is correct.

The Renue by Science Shield Liposomal Supplement brings with it a lot to unpack. Liposomal supplements are a category of supplements designed to enhance the absorption and bioavailability of vital nutrients. HLA also keeps the body hydrated; one quarter-teaspoon of hyaluronic acid will retain one and a half gallons of water. It is often found in cosmetic products, such as skin serums. For all intents and purposes, and by Renue by Sciences own assertions, the Shield Immune Support and Joint Health Supplement is a well thought out, synergistic aggregate of scientifically sophisticated ingredients that fully support those benefits put forth by the seller. In addition, “Shield is formulated with patented liposome technology designed to protect vitamin C, CaAKG, P.E.A and HLA throughout the intestinal tract and bloodstream to reach cells and tissues throughout the body intact.” Well, that’s Renue by Science for you. Renue by Science states that the Shield supplement is manufactured in the USA at an FDA registered facility, under strict GMP standards. There are no fillers or “unnatural” ingredients listed on the bottle. The recommended dosage is two capsules per day, so the 120-count bottle represents a two-month supply. I like what I see here.

I ordered this Vitamin C, CaAKG, PEA, HA supplement because as an over 60’s type I’m finding myself drawn to supplements that are meant to support the aging process (in a good way), especially regarding joint health. Since I can’t look at a supplement and know what’s in it, I evaluate safety by a cursory review of the company behind the product. This supplement appears to be made by a transparent, accountable company with a 15 year history and identified people that stand behind it. Transparency: The company that manufactures/distributes "Shield" was founded in 2009 and is based in Jacksonville, FL. Their web page has an “About Us” page that identifies and provides information about their primary focus (which are longevity products) ,as well as brief bios about their founder/CEO, Research Director (a PhD in Biochemical and Molecular Nutrition), and their Chief Medical Advisor. Accountability: The company claims to “utilize meticulous and extensive 3rd party testing on our products.” In fact, they claim to have pioneered quality testing for NAD, their signature supplement. Note that on their website they display detailed Certificates of Analysis for each of their products, which includes product specifications, the lab with address, dates, and identifiable signatures (the CoA shown on Amazon however is not specific to this product). They claim to be Good Manufacturing Practices compliant and the bottle says “GMP Certified.” Folks on Reddit seem to consider this to be a “legit” brand. Quality: This is a 30 day supply of medium sized (easy for me to swallow) capsules that have a rather mild, neutral scent. They may be taken with or without food. Each of the components is said to be liposomally delivered (by a patented method), which is said to enhance bioavailability. I love that this also has 70 mg of Hyaluronic acid. In summary this would appear to be a high quality supplement by a fairly transparent company.

Liposomal is a small artificial vesicle, spherical in shape, having at least one lipid bilayer. Liposomal Vitamin C is a type of Vitamin C that is better absorbed by the body than regular Vitamin C. Liposomes are tiny, nano-sized bubbles that mimic the body's own cell membranes. By protecting and helping Vitamin C travel through the body, liposomes aid and speed absorption. Liposomal PEA: PEA) is a chemical made from fat. It is found naturally in foods such as egg yolks and peanuts, and in the human body. Liposomal HLA: Liposomal hyaluronic acid is a product that contains hyaluronic acid and liposomes, which are small vesicles made of the same material as human cell membranes. Liposomes can help hyaluronic acid penetrate the skin and increase its bioavailability. Hyaluronic acid is a natural component of the human body that's found in the skin and connective tissue. It's known for its ability to hold over 1,000 times its weight in water. Liposomal CAAKG: alpha-ketoglutarate, is a supplement that combines calcium and alpha-ketoglutarate (AKG). The liposomal delivery system is designed to help with absorption and bioavailability.

The ingredients in this formula have gained popularity in anti-aging supplements. CaAKG is a calcium supplement, while Liposomal P.E.A. is a fatty acid that may have anti-inflammatory properties, and Liposomal HLA is a form of hyaluronic acid which may help with joint swelling. I regularly take supplements with anti-inflammatory benefits, and this is a somewhat unique supplement that appears to target inflammation. While it is always hard to assess the efficacy of any supplement over a short period of time, I am hopeful that this will prove beneficial. The product is manufactured in the USA and seems like a clean supplement. The recommended serving size is two capsules per serving (120 capsules per bottle).

Once you take the cap off, there is another inner cap safety seal. Two safety seals is appreciated. The lid is a flip top dispenser that is easy to open. People with weaker hands should not have any issues getting it to pop open, but if you do, the cap unscrews easily. Two pills is one dose and the bottle has 120 pills. The sales page headline indicates 90 pills, that is a discrepancy. If you take them as prescribed, this is a two month supply. The pills are slightly smaller than a fish oil pill, but they are easy to swallow. I looked up "lipsomal" and Google shows this definition: "A drug preparation that contains the active drug inside very tiny, fat-like particles. This form is easier for the body to absorb and allows more drug to get to the target area of the body, such as a tumor. Liposomal drugs may have fewer side effects and work better than other forms of the drug." Everyone always hopes any supplement works, but this time I really hope. These are really expensive. I took two stars off for the price.

Looking at the ingredients, this formulation seems to have potential. I can't say that I noticed any dramatic improvements in my health during the course of taking this, nor did I notice any backslides. The capsules are easy enough to take, and I do like that it is manufactured in a GMP certified facility. Interestingly, I do like to see a product that is lab tested, but the CofA mentions berberine, and doesn't mention PEA. It makes me wonder whether this product was really lab tested.

I ordered this supplement because it is supposed to help with things caused by aging and gives immune support and helps with joint health. For supplements, I don't make any recommendations. First, because I don't know the result of taking them for a long period of time. Second, I have no clue about your medical condition or how your body would respond. Having said that, all I can do is give you my thoughts on the product. This bottle came with the safety seal securely in place. It is made in the USA which is always awesome. There are 120 capsules and the dosage is 2 capsules a day. My only issue is there's a manufacturing date, but no expiration date. The manufacturing date is 9/2023. I'm pretty sure it will be good for a couple of years, but it would be nice to know for sure. I'm planning to start taking these on Monday. I will update this review if there are any issues, but I do think this supplement will be very helpful to my body.
