One tired sheep wants nothing more than a good night's sleep. All is peaceful untilโQUACK! Is that a duck at the barn door? And now a goat? A pig? A cow? A horse? Each new unexpected guest is bigger and louder than the last! How will the sheep ever get this barnyard crowd to quiet down beforeโCOCK-A-DOODLE-DOO! Review: One of my 2 year old's favorite books! - I ordered a number of books to go with our farm unit. Little Man is at a stage where he prefers to stick to his favs and new books are not readily accepted. Most of the new ones stay on the shelf but this one he loves. The lyrics are lyrical! Almost like a song. The gentle repetition and beautifully expressive illustrations have wonderful appeal! Wish I could find more books he likes as much as this! Review: Best bedtime or anytime book - I'm a Grandma, age 68 with 4 grandkids from 3-8. I bought this book essentially to have sit down private time with the youngest 3 yr old boy, who I seldom get to visit. I picked 4 "projects" for private time with each grandchild during our week long family beach vacation. This book was for the youngest. Au contraire! We started on the book; he snuggled in and loved it; his sister, age 4+ gravitated to sit on the chair side arm, also loving it; then cousin age 6 and finally cousin age 8 couldn't resist and all gathered around about 100 times of reading this book! Whew! It was great, but also a family vacation for all the adults too, so this became our goodnight book. If you like to read to kids or have them read with you, the illustrations are great and "family participation" is even greater as they will surely cheer in with each animal sound and you only have to read the "lead in"! I adore this book as you can laugh, have animation with your youngsters in school or home... just a refreshing bit of realism about "sleep". Valerie Stephenson, Jacksonville, FL

Funny with lots of drama and a surprise ending
In short, this book is about a sheep who's desperately trying to get some sleep, but he keeps getting interrupted by various barnyard animals who come to the barn door making noise and waking him up. One by one, he settles each one down to sleep. When they're all finally asleep, the rooster wakes them all up, except for the sheep who is exhausted and sleeps right through the noise. It's got plenty of repetition, so my toddler can chime in all the way through the book. As I'm reading, I get into the sheep character and read him as frustrated and frazzled, and my toddler finds this very funny. It's got lots of emotion, and for a toddler who's been used to books that are mostly serious or happy, this is a welcome change. We've been reading this since my son was about 2, and I have a feeling we'll be reading it for quite a while. Great illustrations too! They do a great job at conveying the sheep's frustrating and the humor in the situation.

Lovely story, lovely cadence, absolute keeper
This has become my 4-year-old's most treasured book. We borrowed it from the library, and it became an absolute bedtime staple. I bought two copies, and sent one to a friend. It's that good. I start a bit slow, then build the angst, page by page, animal by animal, until the poor frazzled sheep is sleeping late because he slept so badly. My son loves to watch for the doorway shadow in the book so he knows which animal comes next - and is more than happy to tell me when I skip a page. This is a treasured favourite. I enjoy reading it, he enjoys having it read to him. The cadence and the story are absolutely wonderful. He also enjoys "reading it" to others - but in his rendition, it's the "big red barn, big red barn, farm, big red farm barn". I giggle. These moments will slip away, but I'll put this one on my bookshelf after he's done reading it, just to flip through it and remember.

great buy
Awesome story, great ilustrations. Very happy with the buy. And the size of it is just lovely, being so big one the kids can relax laying down in the bed and they can still see it :)
