Still the best in the business after 6 years
Pros: Despite being 6 years old, the Shield TV Pro is still unbeatable when it comes to streaming boxes. The hardware on this thing is absolutely fantastic with the Nvidia Tegra X1 chip. You will never run into lag or have problems streaming. The lossless audio passthrough, the DolbyVision HDR, the AI upscaling, watching movies from external HDDs directly and the ability to run a Plex server natively are a blessing. Cons: However, age does show on the Shield when it comes to AV1, H.266 or HDR10+ support. The device does not have hardware capability to decode these fairly new codecs and features. So no dynamic HDR on Prime Video, no HDR videos on YouTube and no playback support for movies in your HDD or pen drive if they are encoded in AV1 or H.266. Also no HDMI 2.1 so you’re capped at 4K 60hz refresh rate. You may also run into some software glitches while setting up apps sometimes but that’s more of an android thing. Verdict: All in all, there is still no streaming box that comes close to the Shield TV Pro despite its certain lack of new features. Newer competitors like Roku, Apple TV, Google Streamer etc may have new codec support but none of them do audio pass through, USB movie playback, ai upscaling like this one. Now if Nvidia were to release a new shield with modern features, everyone else would be dead in water. Until then, I’d still stick to this 2019 product over others.

Awesome device, even if it is a few years old now.. Has a permanent home in my home theater. I especially like that I can install apps like Emby so I can access my library extremely easily.. I replaced my FireTV Cube for a few reasons and I have not even turned it on after installing the Shield TV Pro.

Pricey for what it is, but when you don't have time for a slow tv box with lag or bugs this is the one you will not regret buying. I love how the remote will work from anywhere in the room regardless of obstructions

I've recently tried a Firestick and Chromecast w/Google TV and I hate them both in comparison. The ads are least intrusive on the Shield and UI superior. Live channels are great (customise your apps to suggest what content you want, not stuck to Prime or trying to get you to buy services (Google)), can add as many pinned apps to top as you like. Can sideload and use apps the other 2 won't let me and has the best location avoidance as well (e.g. various issues w/Pluto, Peacock, Freevee either install or location getting busted even w/VPN on other two). Superior speed/response. This cannot be overstated compared to FS (yes, just using one again setting up for friend, ugh). Good small affordable Plex Server and I love it (P.S: and it streams my collection to my brother 300kms away even on bad Fixed Wireless connection). 2 USB slots so you can use a big HDD or run a powered USB hub w/many. I have an SSD as adoptable storage, meaning I've got 512GB, not 16GB plus a 14TB attached. I use Sony BT headphones and there's no lag when watching movies so that's great too. I don't have a 4K TV, so can't tell on that score but AI upscaling definitely helps, I have a lot of low quality media and it looks pretty good (though occasionally you have to switch up your settings re: artifacts). Has Chromecast. I have both drives mapped as network storage on PC so it's a breeze to load apks or content. I can run emulation up to some Gamecube w/Dolphin, DS is good w/paid DraStic (Retroarch no good for DS on Shield). PSP and PS1 is a breeze (pro tip: Arc Browser app lets you list your game ROMs divided by console on the homescreen too, looks great). Have 3 Xbox controllers connected no major latency at all. GeForce is there if you need it, I was in on the beta but I don't need cloud gaming/launcher but it worked OK during testing as did streaming from Steam on Surface to Shield...a few issues at times but again, I'm Fixed Wireless if you're on cable you'd be fine if you wanna pay the monthly fee. The remote seemed like a weird shape at first but I quite like it. Nice to hold plus there's a free remote app for your phone if you lose remote/it breaks. You can still use Wolf Launcher if the banner ads bother you but I find that a bit dated and ugly and I like the live channels I can add to my homescreen. If you don't have a VPN and aren't into retro gaming emulation or you don't need Plex you probably don't need this unless you're hardcore into 4K upscaling and Dolby Atmos. With a premium VPN and split-tunnelling, you've got Australian and US TV at the same time without having to switch back and forth. Love it. BT Mouse works fine if you need to use trad Android apps (use Sideload Launcher to show any apps that don't show up in your app list. E.g. I use FolderSync to sync game progress to cloud to other devices and that doesn't have a TV/remote interface) The only question I guess is, are Nvidia going to make a 2023? Issues I previously reported are fixed. When it starts getting buggy, reboot.

I purchased mine in 2022 and use it to watch all content on so take my words of wisdom. PSA: Setup pro tip. SmartTube for ad free YouTube and Projectivy launcher to remove all bloat and ads. Ariel View for stunning 4k HDR wallpapers that make you sit there and just watch them. The only thing that is getting old now but still works flawlessly. A new model should be due that would be good. But honestly it doesn't need a successor. This device is truly a all in one dream device. Only downside is the small triangular remote. One button failed after heavy repeated usage and a replacement cost $100. Aside from that i give the Nvidia shield pro TV 10/10. Would buy instantly again if my unit failed without any hesitation.
