CBS Video made available the content; they were the network that originally commissioned the cartoons for airing in prime time.The 2006 DVD has been out of print for some time and prices are pretty high. $70 for a new one. $18 cheapest for a used one. Now for $7.50, the Puff cartoons are available again. There are no extras, but there are, surprisingly, subtitles.Burgess Meredith shines as the voice of the titular character. When he was young, he used to win prizes for his singing ability. He gets the chance to display this over a series of songs on all 3 specials.The last cartoon is probably the best. Puff The Magic Dragon And The Incredible Mr. Nobody has the best songs. It pretty much stands alone from the other two, musically. The other two use the original Puff song as part of their soundtracks. Mr. Nobody does not, featuring all original songs. The theme is also a good one. Imaginary friends can't stay the whole life long.The first cartoon is probably 2nd best. Puff The Magic Dragon's main theme is being brave in the face of ordinary life and its obstacles. It also mixes in a little of the same theme from Mr. Nobody. That imaginary friends are fine when you're young, but you can't rely on them.The 2nd cartoon is probably the weakest. Puff The Magic Dragon In The Land Of Living Lies is not bad, just not as strong as the other 2. It deserves credit for tackling a tricky subject for kids. Sandy's parents are living separately. While it doesn't come out and say they're divorced, they could very well be. Somewhat heavy subject matter for a 1979 children's cartoon.There are only 2 negatives I can think of. The cartoons have a new company logo attached to the end of them that were not present when they originally aired. Nor were they present in syndication 20 years ago on Disney Channel or on the VHS and DVD releases from years past. It's the current CBS Television Distribution logo you see at the end of their current syndicated programming.The subtitles are a little odd. They apparently didn't follow the scripts and just listen to the cartoon soundtracks and generated their own subtitles based on what they heard. In Puff The Magic Dragon, when the cartoon quotes the lyrics "And brought him string and sealing wax and other fancy stuff," they put ceiling wax in the subtitles! There are only three episodes on this disc-- I wish there were more. The stories are magical, clever, creative, and leave a lasting memory. The dialogue is more sophisticated than many cartoons today, and the music will put a smile on your face. The first of the three is the original one, and the quality could be a bit better-- but that is my only critique. In the second and third ones, the colors are bright and crisp. My three year old and six year old are now in love with these too, and are already requesting multiple viewings-- and we've had the disc less than a week.
