Plenty of gain, good sound, great bargain
For $30 or less, this is one of the better high-gain/metal distortions I've used. For general metal-playing use, it beats my HM-2W (which I use for one specific sound at the low end of its gain range) and is way more pleasant to use than the old MT-2 I got from a so-called friend for $20. With the gain at about 10 o'clock and the mids scooped a tad, it sounds like the Crue back in the 80s. Crank the gain and push mids some and you djent to your heart's content. The mids knob in particular is very effective at dialing in different tones. The pedal sounds good into a tube amp and and also sounds good into a JC-40, which is telling. The Roland's almost clinical approach to sound means you are hearing everything the pedal is doing. A lot of famous pedals that sound great with other amps, like Rats, fall flat with the jazz chorus. The Satone sounds pretty rich and layered, albeit bright and a buzzy through that amp (cutting the treble on the guitar fixes it). Everything feels solid and the bypass switch doesn't sound like a bomb going off when you hit it (unlike the PGL High Gain pedal, which I believe is related, more expensive and worse). For $30 this is a great bargain pedal that stands up to costlier name-brand competitors.

Control over tone
I use amp plugins for my sound. Plus whatever effects they may offer. But I found adding this physical pedal to the loop before the plugin amp really gave my sound a very proper boost and tone adjustment to help shape what digital emulation lacks. Added a nice amount of saturation and creativity to the sound. Good price. Be sure to use designated chargers for it. Not just any 9v will do. It's specific in order to get the right power and sound that it's made for. Sounds amazing. Good size. Highly recommend!

It's good but not versatile
For bass guitar this thing is extraordinary as a distortion pedal . For 6 string electric guitar this does not do fuzz well at all , actually not at all without intermittent pausing of sound. This not a versatile pedal either . It has switches and you would think that would give you options but the Fat switch just gives you that weird bad fuzz choppy stuff . The other switch is just a low boost switch which robs you of tone. Soooo the best use for this pedal for me is setting the distortion no higher than 12 o'clock, filter at 10 o'clock, fat switch off as well as the other switch . With this you get a really good 80's punk tone and that's fine with me . I actually play 80's punk and like that tone. Sort of high gain , medium distortion , high mids . It can do some Black Flag , Greg Ginn tone good. Other than that this pedal doesn't work well . It could be the amp too. Some pedals don't place nice with some amps. My Proco Rat 2 doesn't do great with this amp either but does good with my big amp.

Zoinks!
Didn't think I'd be writing this. Don't let the cheap looks fool you, this is a weirdly magical pedal. Of all the China made ultra budget overdrive pedals I've bought and tried, this one surprised me. I dislike the Tube Screamer sound, generally, but couldn't resist rolling the dice for $15 (July, 2025 sale). It is much more subtley harmonic and warm than a TS; slight low mid bump with no harsh high end. Even clean and at unity it improves the Vox I'm playing through, adding dimension with a slight lift in low mids attack and a subtle harmonic liveliness that makes me want to leave it on -- whatever it is. So, like, what's it a clone of Scoob'?

Not really usable
This noise gate, unfortunately, fails in almost every area. It's not really usable for any purpose unless you just want a mute button. Even then... The minor issues: 1) It's an incredibly slow gate. If you're looking for a faster gate for quick attack this is not it. It's surprisingly sluggish. 2) It cuts off the high end of your tone when engaged. This is noticeable enough that it even strips the treble out of distortion pedals, and it's not subtle. It sounds really bad. The major issue: Even if you turn the control knob all the way to the left, on 0, it will cut out your signal LONG before it even starts to trail out. Even on a guitar with loud humbuckers - You'll only get a few seconds to let your chords ring out before it starts to cut the signal. This is really unacceptable, especially when you have the knob at 0%. On a good noise gate I expect 0% to pretty much mean the pedal is off, but unfortunately the Stilhed still activates prematurely. Caline has a good idea going with the Satone line. They're really cool and gothy, would fit on a lot of alternative or even metal boards. Unfortunately, the Stilhed is a really poor showing and feels rushed. Did no one test this circuit? Between this and the Spiritwalker being mislabeled as a Reverb it doesn't really instill a lot of confidence for the other circuits in the series. EDIT: So Satone reached out to me and offered a different pedal. I eventually accepted the Mandarin Overdrive Preamp. Circuit wise it's an awesome BB Preamp clone and sounds great! Unfortunately, after a couple months the footswitch has become intermittent and does not work every time it is pressed. At least this is a QC problem over a design problem, but unfortunately it means I'm not able to change my review in any significant way.

Decent lil pedals
The Mandarin overdrive has a pretty nice clean boost and I like what the treble and bass EQ does. they're pretty significant. however overall there seems like there's a little pillow over the tone ,it seems a little bit muffled to me. In my personal opinion I don't like the gain crunch. but it could definitely be worse. overall for the price you can't beat this pedal.. the English Rose British crime sounded very thick and crunchy and was definitely the gain I was looking for ...once I maxed out the EQ, voice ,and drive.

I stack my distortion pedals and may have from 2 to 7 distortions all driving in series at a time. The trick is to reduce the gain so each pedal adds a small amount of colour/flavour. This pedal is one of the ones that stands out and gets frequent use and I seem to continue to come back to it. Very glad I chose this one. It is proving to be a keeper!
