Valvoline's current Maxlife ATF is Dexron VI which GM claims is "backward compatible" with II/III but, at least in the specific case of Maxlife, is actually thinner than a real II/III fluid which can cause shifting issues. You might also notice that the instructions of some II/III-only products specifically warn against using them in transmissions that require VI. Having said that, a lot of people use Maxlife in II/III transmissions without issue. But if you happen to have a picky transmission that is very viscosity-sensitive, and changing to Maxlife causes problems for you, this might be a worth a try. **Q: So is this better than the Castrol TransMax IMV?
