The unit takes 3 AA batteries (not included) but the remote itself which uses a CR32 battery already had a battery in it, just a paper tab to remove to start using.I was a little dubious about the waterproof statement, but the battery compartment has a rubber gasket on it so there's no chance of water getting in making them perfect for outside. The 16ft of cable means it's long enough too, to wrap around the railing. The remote which uses IR so line of sight is a must, allows various colour display patterns and intensities.There's also an array of colours possible from the lights. I haven't worked out what the "time" button does, but I won't be using the button so I'm not that bothered.A perfect item, highly recommended for the festive season! ### ⭐⭐⭐ Easy to switch on/off 16 Colours to choose from *by S***N on Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 25 November 2017* Either use with battery box on/off button or remote control for more functions, 4 stars due to no instruction you have to sort with trial and error.nice not having to plug into socket as 3 x AA batteries are needed, manual is 1/ White,2/ Red,3/Green,4/Blue,5/OFF.Timer functions once you figure out, battery life is yet to be determined.UPDATE.Unfortunately high battery usage about 3 days .
