You will screw the black piece into the material surrounding the hole. The white louvered cover will conceal the screws when installed. FYI, I found that the perforations on the white cover were so small that not enough air could get through, so I cut that out leaving only the louvers in place. Now the fan can do its job because the air can flow through. **Q: how to install this through the 1" thick drywall ceiling?** A: Use a circle cutter for sheetrock (Home Depot, Lowes, Ace etc.) and screws through the flange of the inner black section.
