Considering these with a yamaha rx579 rxamp- any distortion problems when volume very high, or with scifi electronic movie effect sounds when loud?

Its not about volume when it comes to cinema sound but detail, clarity and precision. If a plane flies from front left to rear right you need t hear it flow over your head. Where you put the speakers, how you set them up is more crucial than how loud they go. I run a pioneer vsx923 with them , set the speakers up correctly and they do sound very nice . Sci fi is excellent for surround sound, set these up with your unit and its better than the cinema. its experimental time. The satelites are best on the designated stands and the sub woofer punches bass that will frighten your neighbours.

I have recently purchased the htk16 and wanted to know if anyone has got any stands for them apart from the hk ones, if so which ones?

The base of the speakers are specifically shaped for a flush fit to the hk stands. They fit well and look good , concealing the wire to the floor. If your concern is about having to spend out for them. I Did, 2 pairs and they are totally worth the money. As for an alternative, I do not know of any that will fit without a ghastly modification to the stand or speaker.

Can i use these speakers with a pioneer vsx 424k with regards to connecting the speakers to the pioneer amplifier?

Use the pre out plug for your sub woofer and always use  LFE - low frequency effect- this will only pump the low frequencies set by your amplifier, meaning more crisp punchier bass through your sub woofer ( remember to position it correctly ) the sub in this speaker package can shake your house down, ha ha

Are the supplied cables of a high quality or would anybody recommend using premium cable?

I've not measured the impedence of the cable itself.  They look good quality and are provided by HK to support these speakers so I would be inclined to believe they are specified to be suitable. I used some of the cables suppled  and the speakers sound great. I also have my own high spec cable buried in the wall for the surround front and rear speakers and as far as i can tell they sound just the same.   My advise would be to stick with the supplied cables unless like me you plan to dig the cables into the wall, in which case i would spend a few quid buying decent cable to suite these and any future speakers you may purchase.  Note: The sub-woofer speaker is fitted with its own jack plugs so if you do opt to use your own wire you would also need ro purchase the jacks - there are two jacks on each end and if you look at the product detail on the amazon page, lower down in the page the cables are individually pictured.Ps. Drve my spekers with a Pioneer VSX930 amp sending 140 W RMS per channel and 200 to the active sub-woofer and it shakes the house down, so I don't think the cables are causing any problem and the sound is very good/excellent
