It is thin paper that you use and dispose. **Q: Color aside, how does this product hold up in comparison to Strathmore's and/or Canson's palette paper?** A: I haven't tried Strathmore and Canson. Grey Matters paper palette is very good. Holds up super well but I can't compare it to others. One sheet of the Grey Matters will last me a long time. Sometimes weeks. I milk it because I can. It's strong. Doesn't fall apart. Sorry I can't be of more help. **Q: How wide is the thumb hole?** A: There is no hole for your thumb. Because I hate cleaning my palette, I tape these sheets to my standard palette either one with a hole or a glass square like I have. Then, when through for the day, you can simply remove the sheet and put it aside if you are using oil paint or dispose of it. **Q: Does the pad have a thumb hole?** A: No, the pads are solid.I shopped around and found a plywood pallet that is rectangular and about the right size.
