Best AVR for home use
I recently decided to elevate my home entertainment experience and brought home the Sony STRDH790.CEK. The decision has been nothing short of transformative. Not only does its sleek black design blend seamlessly with my existing setup, but its performance has been truly outstanding. I've hooked it up to my 4K projector, and the pairing is impeccable. The visuals are sharp, vibrant, and incredibly detailed, making movie nights a cinematic experience right in the comfort of my living room. The 7.2 channel capability, complemented by Dolby Atmos and DTS: X, provides an audio depth and clarity that's unparalleled. Every sound, from subtle dialogues to intense action sequences, is crisp and immersive. What I appreciate most is the reliability of this AV receiver. It consistently delivers top-notch performance, making every viewing session a delight. The user interface is intuitive, and setting it up was hassle-free. In essence, if anyone's looking to enhance their audiovisual experience, I can't recommend the Sony STRDH790.CEK enough. It's been a fantastic addition to my setup and has truly brought my movies and music to life.

Very good indeed
This is my very first AV Receiver. Set up was a doddle. I have paired this Recieiver with my Sony Bravia 9005 TV and Panasonic UHD Blu-ray player using HDMI ARC facility. All devices play very well together. For the Speakers I decided on the Canton Movie 75 5.1 Speaker package. The sound is amazing in my small bedroom. Still running them in but Movies sound way better and clearer than my old Logitech Z5500 speakers. The cross over frequency was set by the Receiver between 110-130 Hz. I've set them all to 130Hz and the sub is left to max Hz on the sub itself. The Recieiver looks great. Good build quality. Gets reasonably hot but then again, don't we all at the moment!! The remote is nice and small. Light weight and easy to select inputs and sound modes. I don't yet know how loud this set up goes but my Sub is only dialed to one quarter total loudness. I'm also planning on adding ceiling hanging small satalite speakers for a 5.1.2 configuration in the near future. Btw. I'm impressed with the "Front Surround" mode and amazingly (when content is 2.0) also using just 2 Channel setting, late at night. I hope this info is of some use to any potential buyer who wants a decent, low priced Dolby Atmos solution! Edit: I have now gone with Front Heights used for Dolby Atmos Height effects and thus have been able to obtain near spec surround sound speaker placement without hanging speakers off my ceiling. I'm happy with the compromise and the fantastic Cinema experience it affords!

Nice, but.......
At the time of purchase I couldn't find anything else with this range of features at this kind of price. It IS very well specified and does everything that I need it to do. I have a Samsung 4K TV, Virgin Media "set-top" box, DVD, Internet Radio and portable media player attached. All good! I also have two B&W main speakers with a further 5 centre/satellite surround speakers connected. Turn it up a bit and watch something like Top Gun Maverick and you'll be impressed. The Bluetooth pairing is easy and playing from my phone gives a good sound with a good range. I've not used the FM function. Setup is pretty straight-forward too. However, there are a few of things I've noticed: 1. Occasionally, you can see bright speckles on the black of the screen. This IS the receiver because if you turn it off and back on, it clears. It could just be this box. 2. The Virgin Media box doesn't think I have a 4K connection when I try and watch Sky Movies in 4K - it says it's incompatible. If I take the HDMI directly from the VM box to the TV, it plays without issue. Whether this is down to the VM box or the Sony Receiver, I can't tell but it's slightly annoying. I don't have any issue playing 4K content directly from the VM 4K channel nor from YouTube etc. So Sky Movies may be sending out a particular signal? 3. The menu is very difficult to see on the unit itself. It's down below the TV almost at ground level so the angle isn't good from the chair/sofa height. Not all menu's are visible on my screen. It seems to decide what it will show e.g. I sometimes see the on-screen volume change and sometimes I don't. I definitely feel they could improve this on-screen menu. If there were more controls on the front of the unit (even if concealed under a flap) it would be easier too. Although I understand that part of the attraction of this box is its nice clean appearance. 4. I would also appreciate an illuminated remote. I only ever use this in the dark so either have to turn the light on or use the torch on my phone. Not ideal. So, at this price, still probably a decent enough Dolby Atmos unit, if that's what you're looking for. If Dolby Atmos isn't important, you can probably find a better receiver. If you're prepared to spend more then go for Denon, Marantz or Yamaha. But don't forget to check your speakers. This doesn't have HEOS or Airplay, Alexa or Google.

Reliable, solid performance, simple set up
It's been quite some time since I need to buy a new receiver. I was completely happy with my previous one which was also a Sony. The older unit was quite a bit more expensive, and higher end than this one when I purchased it. Sadly, as technology moves on, some stuff just doesn't fit in so well with the new guys! My reason for switching receivers was due to needing 4K and HDR Passthrough, something my older unit couldn't do. I don't think the 4K specification had actually been finalized when I got it, so while the sound was great, there was no way to pass 4K HDR video through it's HDMI, and no way to upgrade it. To keep costs down, I decided that this time, I was going to get something a bit cheaper, but keep with the same brand since I was happy with the previous unit, and then later on, invest in something a bit higher end. That plan has kind of gone out the window at this point. The DH790 is great for it's price. It's got all the latest connectivity, but still packs in a great sound. I haven't actually notice much of a difference in the sound hooked up to my Kef speakers. It's quite slim compared to what I'm used to as well, so I gained some space under the TV what was an added bonus. I don't want to get to into the details with this, there's no shortage of consumer and professional level reviews out there already, so it's best to get the full details from them. If your already using a receiver for a standard home theatre set up with speakers rated at around 100 - 120w, and are thinking of upgrading it for newer HDMI standards, or Bluetooth etc, my advice would be to look at something like this. It's way more affordable, and you really aren't loosing much at all. I decided to keep the DH790 rather than spending another £600 - £700 on a receiver that I can't really hear much difference in.

Very good value Sony 4K Receiver
I like high quality sound while gaming and watching TV/films so I bought this receiver to replace an old Sony 5.1 cinema system as I needed 4K capability which my old cinema system couldn't do. I set up this receiver with Q Acoustic speakers and a Yamaha subwoofer to create 5.1 surround in a normal sized living room. I bought banana plugs and high quality speaker cable to make the set up as easy as possible. It's capable of up to 7.2 surround and Dolby Atmos if you want this set up. I've been using this for over a year now and I'm very pleased with the receiver. No issues. It has synced fine through HMDI Arc on my Sony Bravia 4K TV. It has an additional 3 HDMI ports which I use for Sky Q, PS4 Pro and a 4K blu-ray player. I don't like the volume showing up on the TV when you need to adjust it. This doesn't happen if you use the remote the receiver came with to change the volume and make sure the receiver HDMI arc is going into HDMI arc on the TV. If you use the TV remote it will show up. I can't fault this receiver for the price I paid for it. It's very good value for money. My new set up is a mile better than the Sony cinema system I used to have and at the time I thought that was impressive. Watching films and playing video games in 4K quality is amazing. Once you have sound this good you will never put up with TV speakers or sound bars again. So pleased I upgraded my system.

A Dolby Atmos Receiver that punches way above it's price point
£400 for this receiver is an absolute steal. It delivers Dolby Atmos and DTS X with ease as well as 4K HDR. It is a breeze to set up thanks to its inbuilt easy set up function. Once up and running it does not disappoint. Sound staging is immense, though I should add you'll reap far better results watching 4K films via a dedicated 4K DVD player than streaming 4K from the likes of Sky etc. This said, the Sony still delivers with streamed 4K. There is also Bluetooth connectivity so you can stream music from your iPhone etc. All in all for the money this is truly an amazing 7.2 receiver.

sony great build and quality clear sound
i use this for movies and tv shows. i also like having fm radio and blutooth good for playing music as well. great having option for 7.2 speaker setup. only negatives are the radio antenna would have preferred a proper fm socket instead of a wire, got most radio stations clearly eventually after moving wire about. also you need a powered subwoofer instead of a passive one, as i already had a 5.1 speaker set up the subwoofer i had didn't work. small niggles but overall the unit is fantastic and easy to set up.it's like being at the cinema 5.1 movies sound so realistic now, fantastic sound from everything including music. love it

Get one and enjoy.
Fantastic receiver and well worth the price. So let's talk about connections. If your tv has earc or arc hdmi, then use this to connect tv to earc, arc hdmi on receiver. Then connect all other devices via hdmi to the receiver and not to tv. If you have a DVD player or blu ray player then go into the audio settings menu and change linear pcm to bitstream. This allows the receiver to decode the audio directly from the blu ray disc which is definitely better than just getting 2 channel linear pcm decoded from the blu ray player. I have mine connected to a 5.1 auna speaker system and it's brilliant. So there you have it short and sweet. Great product well worth the price. Just a note on speaker calibration. Like some other reviewers stated, I had problems with rear speakers not being recognized and error codes being displayed. I have sorted this by re reading the manual on how to configure the speakers. I have 5 surround speakers and 1 subwoofer, so set the speakers to 5.1ch in the settings menu.

Absolute Sauerei. Zum Glück gibts ehrliche Kunden.
