The best MP3 player I have owned - the sound quality is stunning
Having had several MP3 players in the past from the past ranging from Phillips to Creative, I decided to upgrade to the latest I-Pod for the appeal of the large storage size since my last 60 gb player was starting to run out of space. The 160gb model seemed like a natural choice to go for, and I am so glad I did. I use I-Tunes for my music library, and the first thing of note is the simplicity and ease of use when you first get the I-Pod out of the box. You literally just plug it in to your computer, and I-Tunes automatically synchronizes the tracks and puts them on to the I-Pod. The charge time is quick, around four hours for a complete charge, and the duration of the battery life is fantastic. I didn't quite manage the 36 hours of battery life that it is claimed to have before a recharge is required - I managed just over 32 hours and was perfectly happy with that The main thing, and perhaps the most surprising thing about the I-Pod that I love is the exceptionally crisp sound quality, and it is noticeably better in comparison to previous MP3 players I have owned in the past, even when headphones have been kept constant. I know that the I-Pod has been a market leader for some time and now I can hear why. There have been several claims that he volume setting on the I-Pod is too low - something that I didn't notice at all. I listen to a lot of film scores/classical music which is often recorded at lower levels in comparison to other types of music meaning that the volume should need to be higher to be able to hear it properly. I found on the highest volume setting I was wanting to turn the volume down, and so I would imagine in other genres of music that the max volume level would be more than sufficient for a great listening experience. Of course, it can also be used for photos, videos and a limited number of games, all of which look great and play well, although I was less bothered about these functions. Overall, I wish I had upgraded to the 6th gen classic I-Pod sooner. Whilst I originally upgraded because of the additional storage space, the increase in sound quality was a really pleasant surprise. There have been issues regarding volume limits on the I-Pod, but I found that playing music at the loudest volume setting was more than I needed. The quick recharge time and ease of synchronization with the music on my computer is a bonus, and having owned several MP3 players before this, I can easily say this I-Pod Classic the best.

Great product!
Read a lot of reviews before buying and noticed that people were worried about the sound level. Naturally I was a bit apprehensive. But I can't find any fault with the sound of the one that I got - it is clear and crisp and so strong I never turn it to more than a half of volume. I also never had a problem with ipod's compatibility with my computer. In general very happy with the product. This is my third IPod and the main reason to buy this one was capacity. I ran out of space on my 16Gb nano. The classic 160 is stylish and very solid feeling, nice to handle. The wheel is very pleasant and sensitive. There is a slight drawback of this model which one can only notice if one used later versions - the screen resolution is not as fine as in the latest nano and of course far from the touch screen, the quality of the picture is just not as good. But I can live with it. Great product. Love it.

Deep Space
I've had a 60GB iPod Video (as they were then known) for some years and it became full with 10,546 tracks due to some duplication , though they still played okay. My wife suggested I investigate a replacement. I was amazed to find the Classic version was available with a 160GB hard drive, and at a lower price at Amazon than through John Lewis or Apple Store (though it's gone up in price since I received it -grab bargains when you can, it seems). It was not difficult to decide whether to order or not. In fact, the product arrived slightly before the estimated delivery date, and within the original estimated window. As the postman knocked on the door bearing gifts on a Friday, Saturday morning saw me opening the package (should have looked for the 'no-fuss' option as the Amazon box was full of polystyrene chips - there goes the environment). The Classic has the same footprint as the Video, yet is markedly slimmer. The chunky plastic front of the Video has been replaced by an anodised aluminium one that tapers smoothly into the stainless steel back cover in an attractive and ergonomic style. The scroll wheel and button (part of a 'classic' design) seem more positive in operation and the screen is very clear. My first action was to drag-and-drop two Rolling Stones CDs of BBC radio recordings from the 1960s into the Classic, a quick and easy task in the latest version of iTunes. Then the proof of the pudding, an ear test. Wonderful, clear, crisp music that seemed an improvement on previous sounds on the Video. This may be a feature of the improved hardware or better 'importing' with the revised iTunes, but pleasing nevertheless. I'm in the process of importing all our CDs into iTunes, planning that they will all go into the Classic - note that, as with other memory devices, the quoted size is somewhat larger than that seen by the PC: 160GB is displayed as 148GB (probably plenty for our music collection). I'd give five stars but for the fact the iPod comes with pretty useless ear buds and docking adaptors that are impossible to see how to use. I've recycled all mine in the bin and use an Apple dock that charges the iPod and connects into a Teac mini stereo system to play as I work on the PC. However, whatever the Apple failings, Amazon delivered to its usual standard and surprised me with an email telling me I had an automatic one-pound voucher against my first MP3 download. This has allowed me to fill some gaps in my music library very easily and quickly, and at attractive prices. The days of buying plastic discs seem long gone; just a couple of mouse clicks and the albums are flowing into iTunes. I've set the iPod to manage manually, but the real proof will be to sync when I've put all our CDs into iTunes and see how they go into the Classic. Based on current experience, I'm looking forward to it. Yes, it seems odd to buy a proven product and add accessories to improve its performance, but that's engineers for you. So far I'd recommend the Classic to anyone - the anodised finish should be harder wearing than its plastic predecessor, plus it matches the Teac stereo. As I bought the device to store and play music, I doubt that many of the improved features will be put to use (it's like a small computer or PDA). My Video is going to my wife, though she'll need a sound dock (Amazon website here we come). Strangely, charging docks with mains power and linking to stereo systems seem to be unavailable now; the world seems to have gone to sound docks while my back was turned - shame, it's a great way to listen to the iPod. Update: I've imported all our CD collection into the latest version of iTunes ( three-and-a-half weeks from receiving the Classic), tidied many duplicated tracks and plugged the Classic into the PC to delete the two Stones albums and run a sync process. First time round it seemed slow and only put 131 tracks in, but I was backing My Music onto a 1TB Seagate external hard drive (also from Amazon) at the same time. I restored the Classic to factory settings, a quick and simple task, the plugged it in to sync while we had supper and watched TV for the evening. Several hours later, voila, sync complete; 15,143 songs installed, with 39.1GB free space left. All our albums are now in the iPod at the latest high rate for better clarity. Oh, yes, definitely a worthwhile upgrade that sounds as good as it looks. Even better than my initial experience has been to add more music from downloads and CDs to bring the current total to 16,488 tracks, yet still over 32GB free space. A miracle of storage engineering that the friend who first introduced me to iPod technology admired and said the human interface was so good it would be foolish to change it ('classic design,'in his words). Happy? You bet . . .

Underwhelmed
This is the first Apple product I've bought and was attracted to the huge memory, and all the excited yap from Apple devotees finally persuaded me to buy this. Over all I'm underwhelmed by the product. I-tunes never seems to recognise the ipod first time round, requiring me to restore the ipod to factory settings and reload all the songs again, taking up valuable time. This may be related to me having windows 7, but it doesn't make it any less annoying. It's nice to have 160gb of space, but reloading 160gb every time you want to sync it is less than enjoyable. When it works, it's fine, though its not much better than other mp3 players I've had from Creative, and I've had problems with some tracks not playing when I downloaded them from sites other than I-tunes, which is not an issue on mp3 players that aren't tied to Apple's globa-tron network. So not bad, but not great. If you need the capacity then give it a go; if not then I wouldn't bother, unless swish styling is important to you...

The king of iPods
For a music lover this is the perfect iPod and the best one ever. The huge hard drive means you don't need to pick and choose what's songs you want, just bulk load it and let your mood choose your tunes. There really isn't anything clever about it, an mp3 player that you just want to play music, no apps, no internet, just music. The click wheel is a fantastic bit of design and works amazingly every time. Easy to navigate menus with and it has a great unique look. The battery life is impressive too, with what I'd say is heavy use of 8 hours a day I'm able to get a few days out of it with no problems. Exactly what I want and a fantastic product

Doesn't stand the test of time
I bought this iPod having owned 2 iPod nano 4Gs previously (one 8GB and one 16GB, both blue)They had lasted me very well but they didn't really have enough space for me (at the time I thaught 8GBs was more than I'd ever need, I stepped up to 16GBs then...). I went with the iPod Classic going on the thaught that it would be the same but a bit bigger, a bit better and able to hold every single file on my PC (let alone audio file) and for the most part, it delivered what it promised. The audio playback sounds just as good as my old nanos, although I think I remember it sounding a bit better on them but that could well be my headphones degrading. Video playback is nice and sharp and more watchable on the bigger screen and the device itself feels like it could withstand being dropped out of a 12th floor window in an office building, I'm not going to put that to the test but.. moving on. With all the good things I've said about this just now, it doesn't come without a price. Compared to my previous iPod nanos, this model is quite buggy and slow from time to time. This could be given with how the device reads from the hard drive or the processor in it not being up to the job, here's a couple of recurring scenarios and annoying little issues: when browsing through the menus, it occasionally freezes and stops responding momentarily while catching up with itself, this happens if you're browsing quite quickly: e.g. say I want to find the album Supercell, I quickly move the selector down to "S" in my album list, it's bound to hit some slowdown along the way. album art is loaded quite slowly (anywhere between 3 and 20 seconds on the now playing screen, until then you're just looking the music note "no album art" graphic, this also applies to Coverflow and the album list in addition to the above issue, Coverflow is quite jerky, looks a bit blocky and is just a nightmare if you actually want to try and find anything with it, especially if you have anywhere near enough music to quarter-fill the device. The big thing that gets to me which I find very difficult to overlook is the fact that album and artist info doesn't scroll or have any moving effect so you can read all of the information if it's more than 17 letters or spaces. This means that long artist and album names get cut off. A little workaround I found is to hold the center button to add it to the "on the go" playlist, then go into your playlists and find the song which should have the artist listed below the title with a higher character limit, but this is quite long-winded, inconvenient and not a lot of help if it's an anime song with 5 or 6 different people labelled in the artist. update: 1 year since writing this review, deducted 2 stars because the hard drive in mine failed after attempting to restore it, Apple's website was no help at all (doesn't go into disk mode or anything) and there's no doubt that I'll be told to go "F" myself by Apple when I go to get it repaired. Would be fine if this was at least 5 or 6 years later when the insides are meant to start rusting and it's taken months of abuse but not if I've been taking care of it. Clealy not built to last. conclusion: it's alright while it lasts if you can overlook some small flaws but it's clearly not built to last.

My Take On The Volume Comments
I had previously had the 80GB Classic iPod, but had filled it with music, so was looking for something larger. However, I was put off by all the comments about the lack of volume. And I know a bit about volume, as I have seen The Who, Deep Purple and Motörhead, all holders of the 'loudest band' record in their time! Having looked around and found very little with a similar capacity (and nothing in a similar price range), I decided to take a chance - I mostly use the iPod in the car, through the cars stereo, so reasoned I could just crank that volume up to compensate. Well, I don't know what the comments on volume (or lack of it) have been made in comparison to - but I can detect no difference between this and my old iPod (or indeed a Nano). OK, through the headphones it is not quite as loud as the bass bins at Motörhead, but still loud enough for me. On other matters, the screen is certainly clearer than the previous 80GB one, for both text (song titles) and video. The only problem that I have, which is just the same as the previous iPod, is that when I drag and drop all my music into it somewhere in the process some of the song titles (within an album) get mixed up - the album will play in the correct order, but some of the song titles shown will be wrong. Not a major problem (but would be good if anyone knows a fix - and please don't say load the songs one at a time, I have WAY too many for that option!!) as it does not detract from the listening. So, overall, I would thoroughly recommend this product as a portable music device. If, however, you want neighbour annoying volumes I suggest that you buy some hifi separates .......

Nice for the few months it lasted..
I bought this Ipod to replace an identical one that had suddenly, and for no apparent reason, crashed while syncing, blanked everything on it and could never be used again. It was a big purchase but I felt it was worth it- big mistake. It only lasted about 8 months before the same thing happened. I look after my ipods and there was no reason why this should happen- working fine one moment, I plug it in to sync new tracks and CRASH, it's died. So it crashed, blanked and now if it is plugged in (I live in hope that somehow it might come alive!) I-tunes won't open, the computer can't recognise it.... basically its a total waste of money. I am gutted as this was a significant purchase and there seems to be no support whatsoever available. Its just not good enough. 'Disappointed' is an under-statement. Update- I was clearly very irritated when I wrote this and unfortunately none of the helpful suggestions worked for me. However, Apple did let me send it back and replaced it although of course now the new one is a little temperamental and it is not under warranty as that only lasted for a year from the original purchase. Have to say the replacement did cheer me up a lot so thumbs up for that. And I haven't found another product that has held as much data or been as useful so I will persist!!
