Terrific
These whole urad dal cook up beautifully to make delicious Indian dal recipes. Because they are not split, they take longer to took than split dal and it does not hurt to soak them overnight. These make wonderful dishes either by cooking on the stovetop or in a pressure cooker.

Broken bags, sucks
Packet literally came broken, spilled everywhere. So so upset. Don’t buy it. Would give it a 0 if I could, waste of money 🙄

Great for dosas and makhani
I have been primarily using this in dosa batter but have also used it for dal makhani. I have had zero issues with these lentils in either dish - has been perfect after soaking overnight. Same brand as carried in local market. Would get again.

Whole Urad Dal with husk - a good source of fiber-rich vegan protein!
Unhusked urad dal is a great way to add protein and fiber to a diet. This dal is popularly used in a North Indian dish called Dal Makhani. In south India, the husked urad dal is ground and used to make traditional breakfast staples like idlis and dosas. I plan to use this unhusked urad dal to make dosa and idli batter to increase the fiber and nutritional content of these traditional recipes. Due to the husk, the lentil may need to be soaked longer than the unhusked lentil, prior to grinding. I have been quite impressed with other Taj products on Amazon, and these lentils are no exception.

Great Urad Whole Dal in husks!
I really enjoy these Whole Dal with husks. I like to prepare these with a sauce in my pressure cooker so they get nice and creamy. I love that I can cook it all in one pot although most times I let the beans soak overnight to make sure they get extra soft and creamy. This really gives a great extra amount of protein in a delicious dish. Just saute the veggies and spices before adding the beans with tomato and the water and then pressure cook for a long time. I like to do 40 minutes as that really gets them creamy and if I have to I will use an immersion blender and really get it thick.

Quality whole urad dal with skins. Creamy when cooked in the instant pot.
While they are the size of lentils, these are actually beans. They cook up super creamy though – almost like a risotto if you time it right (something I’ve been practicing with my instant pot). You can go in a lot of directions like these in addition to traditional Indian uses for matpe beans. Good source of fiber and they have a good beany creamy taste.
