Excellent and robust NAS drive
I bought another pair of the 4TB WD Red Pro drives to go in another Synology DS218 NAS, my third now. These drives have the extra benefit of being optimised for NAS working and are heavy duty, and the Synology knows about them and how to make the best use of the system. Except for some chatter when the heads are seeking, I cannot hear them working unless I use a screwdriver as a "mechanic's stethoscope" on the box. The box runs cool. The drives do not come with a fitting kit, but this is not required in most installations which expect to see standard drives and have appropriate mounting systems, as is the case with the Synology. Commissioning and drive checking took about an hour, including unpacking, initialising, updating, and installing all the software and permissions needed. The end capacity in the NAS is not 4TB, but much closer to 3.6TB after big-drive formatting and RAID system are taken into account. However I am happy with this as it is about two years worth of storage, and then it will be time for another newer RAID drive. More smaller new systems with incremental improvements instead of one big old slow one is like having several easily managed baskets for one's precious eggs instead of a big heavy one just asking to be dropped.

Great HDD, just one small niggle...
Bought this 10tb drive to replace a 5 year old 6tb drive in a NAS, as usual with WD its great and time will tell if it lasts. Only thing to mention is it runs noticeably louder than my previous drives

It's WD, always No.1 in my book.
I've been using Toshiba drives recently in my NAS drive, I was impressed with them, but now at only around 3 years of low use i'm starting to see errors in the SMART reporting system. Now I know it doesn't always mean they're going to die imminently....but they could...so it was time to start replacing them, and as i expect 5 years minimum from a low usage drive I decided to leave Toshiba & go back to Western Digital....I've tried Seagate before and found them to be very poor on the reliability front..so WD it is. This is my first time on these particular drives, the Red PRO, it uses CMR technology which is supposed to be a step up from the old SMR technology, faster speeds and reliability, also these have a 5 year, (limited) warranty...the Pro is a little bit more expensive than the basic Red version, but hopefully the little bit more spent equates to a better drive overall with a longer lifespan... Hopefully if it works well i'll replace my other drives with these Red plus ones too.

Upgrade the volume
The two 4TB discs installed first time on a Synology 216+, each took about 10 hours to complete an extended scan and then recover the data from the existing disc. Automatically increased the volume from 1.8 to 3.6TB. Slightly more noise from the new discs but an acceptable level. The last set of 2TB discs failed with sector errors which is poor since they were purchased in May 2017. The despatch from Amazon Germany was efficient and I was kept well informed, unfortunately the despatching staff did not see the need to put sufficient packaging around the discs. The box was too large for the items and the items had broken the side and top of the box. Thankfully the discs survived, another plus but thats the last time I have an Amazon order sent overseas.

Great device - packaging was really poor
Bought this as a replacement drive for one that recently started giving out messages of imminent failure, in my NAS. I’ve always used WD Red drives in all my NAS devices and find them very quiet, in use. Got the pro version of the drive, as it was such a good price, but I’d have no problem going for the plus, if the price of the pro was too high. The only issue I had with this order was that, as per my photos, the packaging was nowhere near good enough for a computer hard drive. Just a bit of scrunched up paper on top of the drive is not enough as the seller should really be much more careful about how they are shipping out items like this. WD pro drives do have good warranties but I hope I don’t have to use it because of appalling packaging.

2 out of 3 Dead
Ordered three of these to replace the five year old WD red drives in my NAS. One drive DOA, another failed after 1 day. The three drives arrived in a cardboard box just big enough to hold the boxes in which the drives themselves were placed. There was no padding or protection whatsoever. Unfortunately, the drive failure caused my NAS volume to crash since I had to put an old disc back because of the DOA one and the volume was being reconstructed when the other drive failed! Fingers crossed that the one remaining new drive holds out. Refund requested for the two failed drives.

Works with Buffalo Terastation TS-XL/R5
Slight overkill but they work, have high MTBF and 5y warranty

Noisy on first installation
The fittings on your old HDD need to be transferred to the new one/s, there’s quite a lot of noise on initial insertion and the formatting but quite afterwards. Being used in Raid 1 so that the disks can be “hot swapped” when faults occur.

Using 2, 4TB drives in a home RAID array for photos, videos, etc. Main drive is an SSD but decided to go with these for bulk storage as they are a bit cheaper (guessing my last time buying HDD's and next time will just use SSD's because they are just so much faster). Drives seems to perform nicely and other than a little HDD noise here and there don't find them bothersome at all. Previously had 2, 2TB of these red drives in a RAID array (had it running for about 8 years) and never had any issues. In our office we have Gold versions of these running on a backup server for about 6 years with no issues. All in all, very reliable. Speed is fine, but obviously not going to compare to SSD. One thing about size of the drives which I see some comments on... The size of the 4TB drive is going to be approximately 4 trillion bytes (mine is 4,000,765,177,856 bytes), however your system will likely report that as 3.64 TB or 3.726 GB. The reason for this is that Windows computes 1GB as equal to 1,073,741,824 bytes and 1TB as equal to 1,099,511,627,776 bytes. These numbers are achieved by raising 2 to an increasingly greater power till you get your first number in the billions and then trillions. There is some technical reason why this is done, but ultimately it is just confusing as it creates 2 different ways of computing size. One, counting the actual number of bytes and the other, dividing your bytes by one of those numbers to get the amount of GB's or TB's. For MB the number Windows uses is 1,048,576 bytes (for example a 20,000,0000 byte file will be reported as 20,000,000 / 1,048,576 = 19.07MB). In any case, here is a summary of the approx drives sizes and around what Windows will report the size as (assuming the drives sizes represent actual bytes exactly, so 4TB for this calculation will be 4,000,000,000 bytes and not the number my computer showed above... so expect the actual numbers to be slightly higher than these): 2TB Drive = 1.82TB or 1,862.65GB 4TB Drive = 3.64TB or 3,725.29GB 6TB Drive = 5.46TB or 5,587.94GB 8TB Drive = 7.28TB or 7,450.58GB 10TB Drive = 9.09TB or 9,313.23GB 20TB Drive = 18.19TB or 18,626.45GB Hope this clears up some confusion here.
