I did read somewhere to add 2 teaspoons of vinegar to help keep it clean so I did that. I have a 1 yr old and 2 yr old cats who would not even look at it. Took about 5 days for the one yr old to take interest. Not sure if either will use it often. Guess it depends on your cats playful instinct.
