Incredible rig that's dense with features. However, beware of shortcomings.
I’ve been using the SmallRig x Brandon Li mobile video rig for a while now, and I’ve got some thoughts. Long story short, I really, really like it, but it’s not perfect. I actually started with the Smallrig cheaper, universal cage. I figured I could just build it out myself. But after buying a bunch of extra mounts, external USB hubs, SSD enclosures, and building a custom focus wheel with an Arduino and PSP thumbstick, I realized I was basically just trying to build the exact rig SmallRig and Brandon Li already made. I forgot it existed so I kept working at my own rig, but it surfaced again and, realizing my mistake, I decided to try it out. The best thing about this rig, hands down, is the handle with the built-in SSD slot. It's such a smart idea and saves so much space. Not having to figure out where to clamp my SSD is a game-changer. The included VND filter is also fantastic and the mounting system is super clever. It can slide around to fit just about any phone, and it even comes with little custom-fit masks for popular phones to block out light leaks. Even if your phone isn't one of them like my Pixel 9 Pro, it'll still work just fine without the mask. Now, for the stuff that isn't so great. While the main cage feels solid, some of the accessories feel noticably cheap. Weather its purely for cost cutting or weight management, it's still noticable. The little shutter and zoom remote feels very flimsy and plasticky, though I personally don't use it anyway because I now have my own wheel. The SSD enclosure is a similar story. It works, but it just doesn't feel premium. Speaking of the SSD enclosure, there’s a bit of a design quirk. It comes with a thermal pad that's supposed to press against the metal handle to pull heat away from the drive. The problem is, it doesn't really make good contact with the handle, so I'm not sure it's doing much. I haven't had my SSD overheat on me that I've noticed, but it's something to keep in mind, especially if you’re shooting long takes in a very high bitrate codec. The SSD-in-the-handle design also creates a problem when you’re not shooting handheld. I have an old GlideCam stabilizer, and trying to mount this rig on it can be a pain. You need the handle attached for the SSD, but the handle gets in the way of balancing everything properly. You could resort to using a separate external SSD enclosure, they aren't that expensive, but it kind of defeats the purpose of the convenience of the handle. One last item; the built-in USB hub. It’s a nice thought, but it’s pretty basic. You get one high-speed USB-C port for your SSD, but the other ports are slower. It didn't quite work for my setup where I needed to plug in a monitor and other stuff, so I ended up using a different external hub anyway which again is not that expensive so not really an issue. Overall, this is a great rig. It packs a ton of smart features into a setup that's a decent price and doesn't weigh a ton. It’s made shooting on my phone so much more streamlined, and you forget it's just a phone at the end of the day. With the VND filter installed it also looks a lot more like a standard camera rig, and could easily pass off as one of those in a profecdional scenario. Just be aware of its quirks like the cheap-feeling remote, the potential workflow issues with the handle, the barely underspeced USB hub, before you buy. If those things aren't deal-breakers for you, I think you'll be as happy with it as I am. I don't expect those things to be deal breaker though, because by its nature this rig is very extensible and can adapt to different users and scenarios very well. At the end of the day, it's impossible to make a perfect product, and this product definitely isn't perfect, but name something that's better than this at this price for this style of shooting. I'll wait. Hope you make the right decision! Do not skimp on watching reviews or reading up on it either they can be invaluable resources.

lost a whole day of filming due to cable speed
Ugh I lost a whole day of filming because the smallrig interface dock module cabling was too slow. It worked fine when I plugged it directly into the hard drive but once all connected in the rig with the power adaptor and everything going it was 50/50 that it would work. I did a test multiple times with various cable speeds and SSD's and no doubt this was on Smallrig. ALSO to note the bluetooth zoom function is NOT COMPATIBLE with Iphone 17 Pro.

A Versatile, High-Quality Rig with Room for Improvement. For professional users!
My wife and I were excited to get our hands on this SmallRig x Brandon Li Mobile Video Kit, and overall, it has a lot to offer. The build quality is solid, with a good weight to it, and once the phone is securely in place, it feels sturdy. The adjustable handles are a game-changer for stability, offering several configurations that make filming feel much more professional. We especially love the SSD slot and power bank holder, which really boost the versatility of the setup. The carrying case is fantastic too—well-padded and designed to keep everything in place. However, there are a few areas that could use improvement. The clips that hold the phone could be more robust; they tend to shift slightly when adjusting, requiring some additional fine-tuning. The pads on the filter plate partially restrict the rear camera, so you might lose some functionality there. That said, this rig kit is a solid choice for anyone serious about mobile videography. While it’s not perfect, the extensive features and solid construction make it a worthwhile investment for those willing to make a few compromises. If you're into professional-level smartphone filmmaking, this could be a great addition to your gear.

Two huge misses.
SmallRig really missed on two extremely important features. 1.the ability to zoom smoothly. The remote is clunky to setup requiring Accessibility settings to be moded on the iPhone. It’s not dependable and the zoom is really unusable for anything close to professional. 2. The mag safe adapter cannot be used with the filters. The means you have to use the built in clip to attach the phone if you are using the provided VND filter. The clip is of low quality so it is difficult to get the phone to remain squarely aligned in the cage.

Perfect rig for my iPhone 16 Pro Max
Smartrig is my favorite accessories brand for smartphone filming. This rig doesn’t disappoint. The handles are easily attached and have quick release. They have remote triggering for filming or shooting photos via the bluetooth remote built into the handle. One handle has a port for an SSD drive to record your videos and photos to. There is an accessory included to hold a battery pack to power up the rig and charge the phone. The iPhone 16 Pro Max will fit, but you cannot use the MagSafe when using filter and lens attachments. I had to make a few adjustments. I have a larger cage from SmallRig that I am going to try with all the accessories from this kit to see if I can make things a little more comfortable with the setup. If you have an iPhone Pro or smaller phone, it will work perfectly out of the box. This is an excellent setup, beautifully crafted with high quality. I definitely recommend this rig.
