Bomber construction. ### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ I love it! *by D***R on Reviewed in the United States on April 17, 2017* I bought this primarily to use as a footprint for my Tarptent Notch 1p backpacking tent, as it's just about the right size to protect the floor of the tent and provide a little bit of floor in the vestibules. Haven't pitched the Notch yet to try it. BUT it's a very well made, well thought out tarp. I've never been one to use tarps but I think this one might get used a lot! They sent a link to a PDF with instructions for 25 different ways to pitch a tarp. I spent Easter Sunday in the back yard, pitching it this way and that, using 2 poles and 4 poles and trees and ... FUN! Some of the pitches were for a square or rectangle and wouldn't work with this diamond shaped tarp. I had so much fun I might have to buy a rectangular tarp just to try the rest of the designs.Some reviewers complained that it's not as big as the measurements state. That's not true. It's not a 9x11 rectangle, this is a diamond shaped tarp (parallelogram if you're a math geek), 11' long tip to tip on the long axis and 9' across tip to tip on the short axis. Each side measures 7.5'. There are sturdy cloth loops at 3 equal points on each side, and on the 4 tips, 16 loops total. On the 4 tips there's a sturdy metal ring in the loop. All the loops are reinforced and well stitched. It looks like all the seams have been taped for waterproofing, but I'm not 100% certain about that.It comes packed in a stuff bag, with 4 guy lines almost 11' long and 4 stakes of the sturdier "garden staple" type in a smaller bag. The guy lines have black plastic 3-hole tensioners affixed. I threw those away and used a bowline knot on the tarp end and taut line hitch on the stake end. Once you know those two knots you don't need tensioners and everything gets simpler. As packaged it weighs 21.75 ounces (well, that's not quite true, I had already removed the tensioners before I weighed, but they can't have been an ounce for all 4). The tarp alone weighs 15.35 ounces. The stakes were adequate in my back yard but you'll probably want something sturdier for hard packed earth.Pitched on two trekking poles with the opposite corners pegged directly into the ground made a reasonably protected space for two backpacker chairs or a nice cooking/dining space for two. Four people could huddle out of the rain but it would be close quarters and somebody's elbows would probably get wet. Pitched on four trekking poles of equal height it made a much larger shaded area, but then it's pretty flat and would pool up rain. Dropping two poles to a slightly lower height would alleviate that somewhat.This is my first backpacking tarp so I can't attest to how it compares to others, but compared to the big old canvas monsters I grew up with, this is a dream come true. The tarp measures about 7' 8" along each outer seam; however, this is deceptive as well, because the tarp is not a flat square. Although not ultralight, the material is reasonably lightweight and a 9'x9' square tarp of this weight would have suited my purposes very nicely, but the "sway back" shape of this tarp allows only a fair weather or light rain configuration that is of little use to me.
