Bestselling author Harriet Lerner focuses on the challenge and the importance of being able to express one's "authentic voice" in intimate relationships. The key problem in relationships, particularly over time, is that people begin to lose their voice. Despite decades of assertiveness training and lots of good advice about communicating with clarity, timing, and tact, women and men find that their greatest complaints in marriage and other intimate relationships are that they are not being heard, that they cannot affect the other person, that fights go nowhere, and that conflict brings only pain, making effective conflict resolution seem impossible. Although an intimate, long-term relationship offers the greatest possibilities for knowing the other person and being known, these relationships are also fertile ground for silence and frustration when it comes to articulating a true self. And yet giving voice to this self is at the center of having both a relationship and a self, the foundation of true self-respect. Much as she did in THE MOTHER DANCE, Lerner will approach this rich subject with tales from her personal life and clinical work, inspiring and teaching readers to speak their own truths during difficult conversations with the most important people in their lives. Based on decades of clinical work, Dr. Lerner offers clear, evidence-based strategies to transform your relationships: Find Your Authentic Voice: Stop losing yourself in your most important relationships and learn to speak your mind and heart with clarity, even when you feel unheard. Navigate Communication Problems: Move beyond fights that go nowhere. Understand the common patterns―like silent men and angry women―and discover how to make conflict an opportunity for growth. Set Healthy Boundaries: Clarify your "bottom line"―the values and limits you won't compromise. Learn to say what you will and won't accept to preserve your integrity and well-being. Understand Your Family Dynamics: Discover how your first family taught you (or didn't teach you) to speak, and how to unlearn patterns of silence or frustration that are holding you back. Review: Great book - Great book easy to read I highly recommend it recommend Review: An Absolute Goldmine! - Harriet Lerner has done it again with The Dance of Connection! Not only is it incredibly readable (as indicated by the amount of highlighting I've done), but it is abundantly practical and applicable. She provides a wealth of examples from her professional practice and in fact her own life, which I love. She doesn't create simplistic formulas for connecting, rather she share principles, enriched by her own deep wisdom and the outcomes that result when used effectively. But she is also willing to admit that her methods are not magic wands that will save every marriage or heal every relationship. Ultimately she makes it clear through her myriad of stories and examples that the dance of connection begins and ends with the connection we have with ourselves. Her advice is not about changing or fixing others. It is about understanding our own drives, motivations and fears. It is about reconnecting with a deep wisdom we almost all possess but often lose touch with. And it is about giving others the dignity and respect they deserve even when we've convinced ourselves they don't deserve it. I love this book and have already recommended it to others. It is a resource I will refer to again and again, savoring it each time. Thank you!!

The Dance of Connection: How to Talk to Someone When You're Mad, Hurt, Scared, Frustrated, Insulted, Betrayed or Desperate (
When I bought this book I was Mad, Frustrated and Desperate to find a solution on how to connect with co-workers and family. Listening to it while traveling back and forth to work helped me with methods to approach co-workers. There was one section that I truly felt she was telling my story and the end result was a confirmation that the problem is not always me but the other person of which I have no control. The connection is knowing what or who you have control over. I found the book easy to listen to and re-affirming that connecting was possible when taking the correct approach to others.

Great, insightful read for everyone.
Great insight into our lives. Harriet is a fantastic writer and writes to all regarding your family, friends, relationships, and the basis of how you were raised, and how your parents' upbringing influenced how you are today. This book is one you should read over and over again. There is too much to take in with one pass. She gets it! Everyone will take something from this book - read it again in a couple of months and I am sure you will get another little gem of (oh! That is so why I do ________ (fill in blanks)) This is a keeper, and I would recommend it as gifts for all the people you love - NOT to change them, but for a deeper understanding of who they are, who their parents, grandparents, relatives, etc. are. This is NOT really a self-help book, more of an insightful guide to human nature, with Aha! moments sprinkled in. Quick, easy read, hard to put down.

Wonderful book
Of all the self-help books I have read, I can easily say that Harriet Lerner’s books are the most useful. She has a way of saying things that I think most people can relate to. But more than that is that she makes the changes that we need to make in ourselves seem possible and entirely worthwhile.

An insightful book
I chose this rating because the book resonated with me and helped me understand better historical/family connections to my own behaviour, insecurities, strengths and failings. I think the book will be appreciated by people trying to understand complexities in life and relationships and is useful to men as well as women

Trotzdem 5/5
