They are made to mount into a stud to be safe and support the weight it’s rated for. DO NOT USE IN DRYWALL ALONE, THIS IS VERY DANGEROUS!! **Q: What size hole should be drilled into a stud?** A: I used a 7/16" bit for hole in the stud, I used a 3/8" bit for the hole in the shelf. Those worked well for me. Also, found that pushing the post into the stud all but the last 1/2" then grasping plastic expansion section with a needle-nose pliers while turning the shelf's post, helped the expansion sleeve expand and tighten the post in the wall. Then once the post was tight in the wall, I tapped in last 1/2" with a mallet. Nice tight fit on wall side and shelf side **Q: Can I use toggle bolts to install into sheetrock rather than solid wall? if so, any idea as to what size to use.** A: I would not suggest using toggle bolts. In Sheetrock, use a stud finder to locate the studs, then drill holes for the mounting rods.
