This connector allows you to use a segment that was cut off from one strip and plug it into the non-cut end of another strip like an extension.  You need to cut the "scrap" strip in the middle of the metal connectors that are right next to the dotted cut line.  Then, using the little metal loop tool that comes with these connectors, you have to carefully lift the metal tabs on the connector so that you will be able to insert the cut end of your scrap strip under those metal tabs.  If you look at the Customer Images, there is one that shows the instructions that come with the product (a small piece of paper with pictures).  Lifting the metal tabs is step 2 and 3.  However, to get the cut end of the scrap strip to fit into the connector, you have to remove the casing on the strip from around the area that is going into the connector.  It will still be a tight fit, but that means the strip won't move around in the connector once you close it and the electrical connections will not flicker.  To close the connector you will need to use pliers to squeeze it shut enough for it to latch and stay shut.  You can then plug the other end of the connector with the pins into the (non-cut) end of another strip.

It will work with most, but I'm sure there is some odd design out there that these wont work with. This is a very simple system, the conductive traces in the Hue strip line up with contacts in the extension. As long as whatever brand has the same trace spacing as Hue, this will work.  Word of caution: do not mix different brands of light strip unless you are sure the ground and the colors align.
