So let me start off by saying that I’m a comic book lover and have been my entire life. Superman is that one character who I'll always keep coming back to and will always be #1 on my list for favorite character ever, I love everything about what he stands for and have more Superman comics and graphic novels/trades than for any other character. This book was hyped up with it being Bendis’s debut at DC. Honestly like most people I think he’s rather overrated but I’d take him over Morrison any day. This book contains the mini series that leads in to the start of his run on the actual Superman title so while the plot does come to a conclusion it doesent really close the story and carries over into the ongoing Superman title. The story was ok and there are elements such as Jon and Lois that I’m not really thrilled with what Bendis does with them, but it’s still a Superman story and honestly I’ll read them all. I get a lot of the dislike for Bendis’s writing on the characters and definently not having an understanding of them and making them do things totally out of character. But that said I think you can look past a lot of that if you love Superman like I do. I will say the actual ongoing series of Superman which you can read the first half of the arc in the unity saga hardcover is amazing, there are still issues with the way certain characters are handled but the story is amazing and I’m absolutely loving it.

In a major coup to Marvel, DC recently signed an exclusive deal with Brian M Bendis (the mastermind behind years' worth of Marvel events and big name comics like Ultimate Spider Man and New Avengers). As part of his new deal Bendis is taking over the Superman and Action Comics titles as the two creative teams that have been writing those books wind down. The Man of Steel is a mini series that basically acts as the prequel to the new run on those two books. Bendis is changing up a few elements of Superman's history and status quo: first, he is introducing a fun new villain Rogor Zaal (who claims to be the culprit behind the destruction of Krypton) and second, he is at least temporarily separating the Superman family. Zaal is the better of the two elements so far; he is a Doomsday level villain with a huge presence and a ton of power but he is also hyper intelligent and a master tactician. His hatred of Krypton and its inhabitants comes from a misplaced sense of protecting the universe from them and when he learns he didn't wipe out of the entire race he heads to Earth to finish the job. Zaal is going to be a major foe for Superman going forward and they have some fun back and forth scenes here aside from just a Doomsday-like thrown down. The Superman family drama isn't as solid so far, however, and has caused a bit of controversy around the new run. Lois and Jon both seem to be missing and Clark seems in mourning throughout the book, until it turns out that Jon has gone on a tour of space with his re-stabilizing grandfather Jor-El (revealed to be Mr. Oz in a recent mini event) and Lois goes with him. Bendis has sworn in statements online that he has no plans of breaking up the Kent family, but either he's going to put fans through their pacing for the sake of cheap drama or there's something else up his sleeves. All in all a great Superman comic with an engaging new villain, but it does lose some points for the needless sidelining of Jon and Lois (especially after Peter Tomasi's recent run has shown that being a father figure was the exact course correction Superman needed).

All I've read was just gloom and doom about Bendis taking over the Superman books, so glad I decided to buy this book and find out for myself. I absolutely loved it! Couldn't put it down! Just ordered Vol. 1 of Both Action Comics & Superman can't wait to see what happens next!

O lo tomas o lo dejas. No lo recomiendo para gente que no vaya a leer su Superman/Action Comics ya que es como un prólogo que define ambas series. Me encantó.

Lois Lane has been fired and The Daily Planet is about to be sold. Perry White believes Clark Kent has lost his edge as a writer and an alien of immense power is attempting to cleanse the galaxy of the scourge of Kryptonians. Another ordinary day in Metropolis. The story is overcast with doom and sadness, but there are some silly bits of meta humour, for example while Superman is getting pummelled through a cafe, the owner and her friend comment about the weirdness of the trunks over the tights look coming back. The strange thing is, the joke still works. There are some beautiful panels, for example one near the end of the book sees Clark slumped in the corner of his son's room, overcome with sadness and another sees Supergirl gently lifting Superman from the dust of the moon after he loses a battle. Overall, 'The Man of Steel' has a bit of work to do to move the story from one phase of the 'Superman' story to another and it should lose points for ending on a cliffhanger but it is worth checking out.
