The feeder is about ten inches in diameter so you would need at least 5-6 inches from the hangng point to the pole **Q: How much seed does this feeder hold? Thanks....** A: A lot! It is the largest feeder I have seen. Gave as a gift so I can't remember exactly. At least half gallon maybe a gallon. **Q: Will this feeder keep bluejays from eating the seed? What size are the openings?** A: I'd like to answer more quantitatively, but the feeder in inaccessible just now due to the blizzard of 2015. Blue Jays, however, should be too large to access the inner core screen holding the seed. The manufacturer would no doubt be able to give the dimensions of the outer cage. Or I will after the snow melts. As with the other responder, I've seen the cardinals give up trying to access the seed. Titmice have fed, but squirrels have also given up. **Q: Can you feed Bluebirds meal worms without the Starlings getting in?** A: The short answer is yes, however my blue birds eat from a platform. I have seen the bluebirds eat from this feeder but its challenging but I think if you don't have any other feeders they will go for it. Also, the bullies at my feeders are squirrels and blue jays. These bullies stopped trying to eat from this feeder. Β Too much seed falls to the ground. The finch takes one seed from the hopper and 2-3 fall on the ground. I'm using sunflower hearts. Grackles soon figured out that by making a hard landing or a quick departure shakes the sunflower hearts out of the cage and onto the lip at the very bottom of the feeder or the ground. Also it needs perches on outside for the birds to sit on. The bird are apprehensive about sticking their heads in by just hanging onto the side. At present I am using coat hangers to givethem some to sit on. The chipmunks cheeks get full and good chance they will get their head stuck 😬 only the small birds use it...such as chickadees as they can get rt into it. Bigger birds cannot get in.
