This device uses thermal conductivity to try to see if the gem is a diamond. Diamonds have a high thermal conductivity unlike Cz and glass. So touching metal will register as a diamond as well. If you are touching the metal of the jewelry and the metal plate on the back of the tester it will flash saying the resistance is low hence metal.
