Water eventually soaks through, albeit slowly. I have a slow drip system which dispenses 2 gallons of water in an hour which is slow enough to absorb into the soil and the roots of the plant. Hint for installation. Don't pound them into the ground. I used a 1" auger a predrilled a 24" deep hole and then set the pipe. If you pound them in you'll have a ton of trouble. You'll never drive it 24" into hard soil and you'll damage the pipe and cap trying to do so. **Q: How do you know how long of a spike you need? I have adult citrus trees that are getting hot in Arizona** A: I live in the Phoenix area and attended a very informative seminar last weekend. Trees should be deep watered to a depth of 2-3 feet. After watering, to determine how deeply you have watered, get a 4 ft long piece of 5/8" rebar and shove it down into the ground as far as it will go. When you can't go any further, it means you have hit dry ground. Make a mark, pull it out, and measure. Another great tip: 'if you use a water irrigator spike ( like the Ross root feeder or similar), drive it into the ground at intervals all around the water line of your tree. The ground in this area is so hard that the hole you have created will stay open for years., so when surface watering or when it rains, the water will get straight down to the roots. **Q: What are they made of ?** A: The stake and the cap are made from a very strong plastic. the stake is lined with a fine mesh screen that keeps the soil out as the water seeps into the soil. Depending upon the plant's root structure, I have installed all three lengths. This is an excellent product. **Q: Can the 36inch model be cut down to 24-30inches, and then have the cap be put back on? I am aware they sell a 24inch model** A: Possibly, but you are making it harder for yourself because you'll be getting you drill closer to the ground in the process and possibly getting dirt into it. If buying a 24 inch will work then go with that method. They are also frustratingly difficult to find in garden stores at this size, but are readily available on Amazon at a good price. They are also STURDY for being plastic. When driving the first one in, I broke the HAMMER I was using, but the watering spike was fine. I'll be buying more! ### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ A huge improvement for my thirsty trees *by J***F on December 17, 2018* We have sandy top soil so when I try to water my trees with a drip system the water just beads off and rolls downhill. I drove two of these into the ground and they are able to get a lot more of it into the ground. I was worried I was going to break them when hammering them in to the ground, but they are very tough and went in easily with a rubber mallet. I was surprised how easily they penetrated the ground.5GPH was too much for my soil so they leaked out the top. I went down to 2-3 GPH and almost all of it absorbs into the ground now. My myoporum trees no longer look like they are dying and have a lot of new leaves growing, and actually have white flowers coming back now! ### ⭐⭐⭐⭐ These are worth it, with a caveat *by S***N on August 9, 2022* I really wanted to be able to just stick a hose in the top and deep water that way, but water sprays out from the side holes, and the top. I just could not get a good enough seal by holding it, and there was no way to hook the hose up to it. I really, really, did not want a water line going up the side of a very large planter with a tree in it, but that is what I ended up doing, I purchased two, one for each side, put a drip line in each, and it seems to be watering very well. It is just an aesthetic thing for me, so I've gotten over it. However, I did take off a star because the product info make it look like a hose can go on/in this thing, and unless I am doing something so very wrong, it does not, plus the water spraying out of the side holes defeats the purpose. Also, a standard drip line was too thick to go in the side holes and work well, so I had to run them from the top, using the side slot.
