From mechanical automata to modern-day androids, explore more than 100 robots and discover how they work, who made them, and how they affect the lives of humans around the world. From drones used in battle to robot helpers taking care of hospital patients, Robot shows how robotics and artificial intelligence (AI) are becoming part of everyday life. Each robot, including service robots packing food and rescue robots finding people after a disaster, has its own profile to explain its features and uses. The book is divided into clear sections by the jobs a robot might do, so it's easy to compare and find out about robots from different areas of science and life. There are also focused articles on specific features of robotics, such as the ability to learn, which will help you learn more about the technology behind these fascinating machines. Packed with vibrant graphics, punchy colours, and a mind-bending array of information, this book makes one thing clear: the robot revolution is here to stay Review: The best one - This is the most comprehensive, well illustrated and modern book on robots for kids. Though my 7 yo son has been interested in robots for a few years now, we still managed to find models we never heard of previously, alongside with stages of robotics history etc. Review: A great book for a child interested in the scope of robots - Having taken my grandson to see a robot exhibition last year he's been hooked. Many of the robots in that exhibition are featured in this book which describes the various uses of them. Earlier this year he was asked to do a presentation at school and asked me to get him a book on robots, his chosen topic. Sadly this one wasn't available then but I'm sure he will appreciate this book when I give it to him. He's 8 but it will be of interest to children a few years older than that too.

Seriously interesting!
This is an absolutely gorgeous guide, packed with everything you could ever want to know about robotics and how much progress we've made so far. It's pitched for roughly 9 to 11-year-olds, but to be honest, I didn't know most of what was in this book, and a lot of it is fascinating to me as an adult. I'm sure that after reading sections of this with my seven and nine-year-old kids I'll be going off on the internet to learn more about some of the robots we read about! Some of the DK encyclopedias feel frivolous and lightweight, and both of my children have some fairly useless compendiums of facts about Lego or Disney films, but this one is genuinely educational, and collects facts that I haven't seen anywhere else. In my opinion, this is a brilliant book!

Very good visual robot encyclopedia
There's a clear amount of effort gone in to this book of all this things robotic. It's bursting with information, all presented with gorgeous visuals. Upon presentation to an eleven year old boy, his eyes almost popped out of his head. It does however take some effort to digest the information, simply because the subject matter demands that there is so much of it. Robots and robotics require explanation, especially with the diversity presented in the book. Despite all the visuals, the book can be a bit daunting. To get the most out of this, I'd suggest secondary school readers is the target audience. Younger browsers will likely do exactly that, browse and enjoy the pictures. It's not so much the use of complicated language and complex sentence structure, for those factors have been taken in to consideration. It's the content that is rather dry and factual, rather than exciting and energetic. I found this a little odd, considering the usual approach from DK. It might just be the scientific nature of the material. The font is very readable, the photos of excellent quality. Each page is well laid out allowing the spectacle of modern robotics to shine. Adults as well as children will be able to enjoy the book and it covers social, domestic and work products. There's a little science thrown in there too, so those truly fascinated, as well as new-comers to the field will be educated. A few of the robots are presented with their abilities, yet no reason for their existence. which is a little odd. When thy "why" question arises, there's no answer, disappointingly. Minor quibbles aside, this is a very good reference book. Well produced and hardy, this can be a long time reference tome, which despite the continuous advances in the subject, shouldn't be out of date in the future. I hope...

These are the droids you're looking for...
Nobody does illustration heavy information rich books quite like DK. This is very typical of what they do best. The design, layout and especially photography is simply exceptional. The text is aimed at children and has the appropriate level of detail required. This book is about real robots as opposed to robots from TV and the movies, although it does reference them. It shows how robots are being developed to help business and industry and also robots for domestic use, such as cleaning, but also the role robots are playing in healthcare, especially as companions to the elderly. We discussed the way the robots were often inspired by nature and animals, dogs, kangaroos and seals for example. Hopefully it will inspire an interest in design, technology and engineering amongst those who read it. It is worth the price for the stunning pictures alone. This book is aimed at 9-11 year olds, but my 7 year old daughter was captivated by the images and the range of robots that have been developed and enjoyed being talked through it. My husband and I enjoyed reading it too, so I feel the audience is much wider.

Real life robot facts
If you have a boy or girl who likes tech and fact based books this is great. It is easy to pick up and put down and each robot is explained with bite size bits of info. It's well laid out with high quality clear photos well designed for it's intended audience.
