I love the different issues between the families and how we come to such a beautiful resolution and despite the happy ever her after we leave relationships being slightly imperfect, which just adds to the realism. The kind of cinnamon roll MMC who quietly steals your heart and makes you root for him from the very first page he appears on. Their chemistry is slow-burn perfection, and the way their relationship evolves feels honest and earned. I absolutely adored the second-chance romance aspect and the cozy, chaotic found family they build around themselves. It gave the story so much warmth and depth, balancing out the heartbreak with moments of joy, connection, and hope. Funny, tender, and full of emotional nuance, Funny Story isn't just another love story—it’s the kind of book that lingers with you long after the last page. Five stars, hands down. ### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Truly an outstanding romance! *by M***H on November 3, 2024* Another 6 star read from Emily Henry! This one was a solid, enjoyable romance, but 3 things took it to the next level. 1. Miles *insert swooning emoji* 2. Her realistic and nuanced emotional arc for the heroine 3. The prose - she has these PERFECT little metaphors to convey complex emotions that always hit just right and make me reach for my highlighter. The emotional arc, though. *happy sighs* As a reader of way too many romances, I'm aware how many of these books skim the shallower layers of "I've been hurt before but this time, this person sees me." I feel like Henry really WENT THERE a bit more with this book, especially in the third quarter. The use of the father's visit to drive her point home was amazingly effective, as was the use of both of their exes and how that was a funny part of the setup, but also one that ran very deep with hurt for both of the protag's insecurities. I really FELT how the heroine always felt second-best, like the one that was disposable to others, and how it felt too easy for her ex and her father to just...not care that much and forget about her. Henry also did a better than average job of showing the layers of Miles understanding Daphne, truly enjoying her company, and showing them slowly, naturally, slipping into a mutually supportive and fun friendship. I TRUSTED Miles so implicitly--you just got the idea that you knew who he was and he was bone-decent and truly cared for Daphne. The supportive characters and found family were really convincing here, and I loved the two subplots about how hard it is to make and keep adult friendships going. I feel like the author didn't give us the "cartoon perfect" example of that, as gaslighty as it can feel. Wonderful book-fun to read and full of depth and nuance.
