Purchase this machine based on some positive reviews and some good YouTube videos however this is a complete plastic piece of inexpensive lawn equipment. The motor started smoking in seized about 20 minutes after using it on about half of my front lawn which is a half an acre meaning it only works for about an eighth of an acre. During the time it worked extremely well pulling up exactly what I would want it to pull up. However the white handle that you need to hold down for the blades to spin also broke on the right hand side a piece of plastic and a screw flung off somewhere in my front lawn meaning that the white bar would come right off and it would stop working. I ended up returning the item and I will no longer be purchasing another one of these I will look elsewhere I highly suggest you do not purchase this item.

i used it for an acre. i did half one day and the other half the next day. i went one direction, planted seed and then went over it in the opposite direction. you need a heavy-duty cord rated for 15amps. if it is 100 plus degrees outside it will overheat and stop working. this happened to me, partly cause i hit a lot of rocks, but it cooled down quickly and started to work just fine. much cheaper than then renting one...

Followed the directions. I have never dethatched my lawn. I mowed the lawn very short. Started at the highest off-the-ground deck level setting just to see what it would do. About 15 minutes later it started making a terrible noise and then stopped completely. The manual said the machine has thermal protection so I let it cool and it did start again but continued to make a terrible noise and the dethacher roller was not moving. After a few minutes it completely stopped again. Tried to contact Sun Joe. The email address provided came back as "The recipient server did not accept our requests to connect." from Gmail. A search showed other people mentioning that Sun Joe was impossible to contact for warranty service. So, back to Amazon it went and I won't be buying another Sun Joe product.

This works perfect for what it is !! The power rake option pulls massive dead debris out prevents thatch build up - great for my 1/4 acre - no gas/oil - quiet - and literally weighs nothing - like pushing a sweeper - already paid for itself with what rental fees are- get one!

1st one was broken; they replaced it…went to use it and the detacher doesn’t detach anything…I had an older model that was incredibly effective, I expected this to be as good or better. Absolute waste of my time and money…it does not work.

Do not purchase. Extremely poor design. New height adjustment mechanism is extremely poor for the dethatcher tines. It will barely scratch the surface of the thatch. The numbering of the height adjustment is silly. Go with the old model with the old style adjuster. Also, the unit was useless out of the box as they shipped 2 left handle attachments making assembly impossible. Also don't get fooled by amps. A bit of trickery in the industry, if they add more windings to the motor, the can toute it uses more amps, hence the consumer thinks it's more powerful. Not so.... Also, take a good look at all the units by Sun Joe and 20 other names. They are all the same unit with different exteriors. Sun Joe, tried to demand $199- for the same exact unit for way less. Don't get taken. Look closely. An interesting tidbit.... The manufacturing companies know what the consumers look for and try to market it as a special, name brand unit, it's a lie to consumers. They make 3 versions of the same unit and offer them through different sales channels.... So Harbor Freight has the same product as Snap-On as an example, a few cosmetic changes and Snap-On can demand 5x the price. The same exists here on Amazon, same product, different price, different shell, different name, same junk.

Now, this is a product that requires a review to highlight how great this product is. I am the type that tends to believe bigger is better and with this product I didn't go wrong. I was initially hesitant to get the 15amp model in fear that it would occasionally trigger/blow the 15amp breaker, but it did not. We have a 1.3 acres lot and although it is not all grass, we have lots of grassy area that needed thatching. In a nutshell, this Sun Joe unit works like a charm without any issues. I highly recommend this product. I had seen it positively shown on a YouTube video and it truly was right.
