Yes, I just tried with my wife's 15.6" ACER . Not a problem at all, very steady.

Is the height adjustable?

Not really, but the angle my lap tops sits at while resting on it is perfect for me.

Is this good for a dell xps laptop computer?

It appears to work with any laptop, so I would think that it works for Dell also. I use it for several within my office.
