I want to record a cd/dvd from a vhs tape.  will this component perform that function?

This unit does not record a VHS to DVD. Just what is on TV to VHS.  You will want to check on Amazon for the Toshiba DVR660 as it does the functions you are describing.

What causes the dvd player to start freezing/hesitating?

Try pushing the play button more than once and wait for a response and if that dosent work then the player might be trying to read a hazed or scratched disc.Make sure you are using a prerecorded disc and not a burned disc.Take out the disc and examine the bottom surface with the thin grooves.If it has a hazy reflection or fingerprints take a microfiber cloth and remove them with a light circular motion.If the disc has light scratches then use a furniture polish spray or oil such as Old English oil.Spray or dab on the cloth and apply to the grooved surface in a light circular motion.Insert the disc and wait till it reads the disc.You might have to use your remote or manually push the DVD/VCR button to switch it to DVD mode.Wait to see if it reads the disc.Push play if needed.If you still have problems try inserting another prerecorded disc in excellent condition and retry.If problem still exists then you have a malfunctioning player.

Tape deck did not work, no remote came with it. Had to throw away has had one where the tape deck did not work. Is the reason I bought another one
