Q: what is the correct way to open the door to get to the coffee filter? When I pull, I have to pull hard and it sounds like I am going to bust it.

you are correct if you pull it you will bust it! On the Cuisinart DGB-550BK Grind-Brew coffee maker it's better to push the button on the left lateral flank and it will pop open.

Q: Can you remove the grinder for cleaning? My previous coffeemaker did this and it's a great feature to keep things clean & tasting wonderfully.

Grinder cup, grinder lid, brew basket, coffee pot can all go in dishwasher top rack. I bought an extra set of all on Cuisinart website. Now I always have a clean set with the previous day dishwasher load. A little pricey but the fresh ground coffee is so much better.

No, not on this model. It puts out a pretty fine grind though.
