It seems to go on thicker, though both versions are soft, glide on easily, and have staying power(waterproof). I selected the brown, which goes great with my blond hair highlights. I switched from the black and have gotten many compliments. I was about to get a second one just to have it on hand but they have raised the price almost 25% for the brown retractable version in the past week so I will wait and buy it when needed.
