What are the Dimensions of clock face, not including the ring top?

My clock isn't an oval shape so I don't dimensions of that shape. Mine is more of a rectangle ... but, top to bottom, edge to edge, w/o ring is 12 1/2 inches. Side to side at widest point is 10 1/4 inches. I like it a lot and, for these old eyes, it's big enough to be seen across the room. Hope this helps.

How do I get the battery compartment open?

There's no cover , battery is on the back .. just pop a battery into holder and set the clock at the same time.
