The Sugarland Express is based on the true story of Lou Jean Poplin, who kidnapped a Texas State Trooper and led the police on a wild chase across the state in an effort to save her son from adoption. This complex role was enough to lure superstar Goldie Hawn back to the screen after a one-year hiatus following her Oscar®-winning performance in Cactus Flower. It also marks the feature film debut of a young, now famous, director, Steven Spielberg. Review: The Sugarland Express - I enjoyed this movie. Goldie Hawn was exceptional this being one of her earlier films. Steven Spielberg directed this before he became well known for his other mega hit movies like Jaws. It's a true story about a young mom who wants her baby back after the baby has been taken away from her by child welfare shortly after she was released from a womans prison. She travels to visit her husband who is in a short release prison farm (only 4 months left of his term)and forces him to escape and help her get their baby. Reluctantly he does and along the way they come to kidnap a young Texas Patrol officer and the chase is on towards Sugarland. Though it's a true story, the movie depicts the action to take place over a two day period when in actual fact it was only several hours. But still the story is interesting and heart warming. You can't help fall in love with the innocence of the three main characters in this true life adventure. There is comedy, and action but most of all hope. I highly recommend watching this movie. Review: Great True Story. - Outstanding. First time seeing this Movie. I drive past the Gas Station in the Movie that’s located in Bergheim, Tx., All the time.

Spielberg at the beginning.
This a tremendous undertaking by a very young director before he made Jaws. The coordination it took to film this was truly impressed on me. Goldie Hawn and Ben Johnson are great. And a young, pre-Die Hard, William Atherton, was very sympathetic as Goldie's cohort. The only reason I gave this 4 stars instead of 5 is that I felt after 50 years and a 4K release, Spielberg, Williams and the rest of the actors should have made a retrospective documentary on their memories and the making of the film.

This was a great true story from my teenage years!
Although it’s based on a true story, it’s hard to believe it actually happened. I have always loved Goldie Hawn and she was perfect in this drama. I found it to be riveting, funny, tragic and entertaining throughout.

Decent classic movie
I watched this as I grew up in Sugarland & Richmond near the prison & still do live in Richmond. The wife worked at the prison when I met her so I watched purely out of nostalgia, hoping I'd see some old sites. SPOILER ALERT: Well apparently people were easy to fool back in the day, especially with no internet! I saw 2 scenes in Richmond! The rest of this movie is shot lord knows where, mountains in the background we are flat, etc., California maybe? It takes them the whole movie to reach Sugarland & it is literally next door in real life! So for someone who lived here their whole life it's a rediculous movie as they drive all over this part of Texas to supposedly come back to the next town! Could it be entertainment? Sure IF your not from here

Hysterically funny parts
I know this has a tragic end but so many parts of this movie are hysterically funny that you can almost call it a comedy as well and Goldie Hawn is just delightful in it and I'm so glad I have this movie

Great story
Based on a true story. An early Goldie Hawn movie that is well worth watching. Great fun doing research on the actual news event as well. Highly recommend

Great old movie.
The base movie is good enough. Two characters steal every scene they are in: 1. Ben Johnson as the lawman with scruples, but at the end of the day he has a job to do. From a technical standpoint as well as acting and directing, imagine what it took in 1972 to do that 360 talking and driving scene. 2. Early 1970's Dodge and Plymouth police cars. Workday machines that no one appreciated at the time and no one collects today. The police versions were stripped down yet had the big engines. At times, Spielberg makes them a character as much as any live actor.
